Workforce Wide Furlough Plan for July 1, 2020 – December 31, 2020

Commencing July 1, 2020 and continuing through December 31, 2020, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will implement workforce-wide furloughs for ongoing employees (not otherwise exempt) for the purpose of reducing overall institutional expenses in anticipation of reduced program revenue and loss of state funding.

Eligible employees will be furloughed November 27, 2020 (Day after Thanksgiving) and all campus locations will be closed for business on that date. In addition to that day, eligible employees will be required to take additional days of intermittent furlough between July 1, 2020 and December 30, 2020, with the number of furlough days based upon base annual salary as outlined within the Workforce-Wide Furlough Plan.

Individual notices outlining furlough allocations will be delivered to employees via email tomorrow, June 19, 2020. Employees currently on consecutive furlough will also receive that notice via postal mail.

For more information about the FY21 Workforce-Wide Furlough Program including process, timeline, and exemptions, please see the Workforce-Wide Furlough Plan.

Returning to the Work Site

In an upside-down world, sometimes good news can cause mixed feelings.

For instance, if you or a family member was furloughed, temporarily laid off, or asked to work from home in response to the COVID-19 epidemic, being asked to return to work can be great news—wrapped in fear. With a bow of anxiety on top.

That’s OK. That’s a normal reaction.

Make a Personal Plan

Some states are very slowly starting to reopen work sites, shops, schools, and public spaces. Venturing back into these spaces may cause feelings of fear, worry, and even anger.

It may help you to know that many other people share your anxiety. It’s a healthy response. Use it to motivate yourself to make a solid plan for returning to work. Here are some things you should know before creating your plan:

  • How COVID-19 is transmitted.
  • Basic infection prevention measures.
  • The signs and symptoms of infection.

Execute Your Plan

Now that you have some solid science-backed information, start your plan. The best plan is one that you create and feel you can execute. Below are some suggestions. You can rearrange, skip, or add items as you need or want to. This is your plan.

Make sure you continue to:

  • Exercise to reduce stress and boost your immune system.
  • Get enough sleep to help your body manage stress and boost your immune system.
  • Eat healthy to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to prevent infection.
  • Meditate to calm your mind for clear thinking and better focus.

Start working on:

  • Figuring out how you will ease back in to work—Create a calendar, step-by-step plan, or tactical report—it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you have a plan.
  • Making household arrangements—Talk to family members about their concerns and expectations. Don’t wait until the day before to line up daycare, meals, etc., if you usually take care of those things.
  • Getting your supply list together—Start a list now of the things you want to bring with you.
  • Learning to avoid touching your face—Seriously. You would be surprised how often and unconsciously you touch your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Things you can do when back on the work site:

  • Discourage coworkers and visitors from using your phone, computer, tools, or other work items.  If you must share, be sure to wipe down all surfaces between users.  And try not to use others’ items as well.
  • Keep a 60%-alcohol (or higher) hand sanitizer at your desk or in your tool bag or pocket.
  • Try to maintain space between yourself and coworkers.
  • Stay home if you are sick.  Ask others to do the same.
  • Know and follow your employer’s guidelines about staying safe at work.

UW-Green Bay Employee Workplace Expectations for July 1, 2020 – August 31, 2020

Due to the COVID-19 Event, UW-Green Bay has restricted access to campuses for the public, staff, faculty, and students.  Consistent with Chancellor Alexander’s communication on June 15, 2020, the University will allow access to campus buildings from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday starting July 1, 2020.  Access will be permitted for employees, students, and members of the public transacting University business.

All employees will be allowed to return to their work areas during the above listed times, but will be required to adhere to the established Employee Workplace Expectations which are set forth in the linked document.  These expectations have been established to protect both employees and members of the public who access University facilities.  Please carefully review the attached, and confirm your receipt and understanding by completing this electronic acknowledgment form.  Employees will not be permitted to return to campus on or after July 1, 2020 until the acknowledgment is completed.

The University continues to encourage all employees to work remotely so long as they wish to do so and are able to perform their assigned work in a remote environment.  Prior to returning to your work area, please advise your supervisor of your desire to return so they can appropriately establish staffing as well as secure the necessary safety materials for your office space.  If you have been requested to return to work and do not feel comfortable doing so, please advise your supervisor who can work with Human Resources to resolve the issue.

If you have any questions about the attached documents, provisions of safety materials, or other concerns, please contact Human Resources at hr@uwgb.edu for assistance.

Upcoming Legal Holiday Reminder

UW-Green Bay observes 9 legal holidays each year (click here for dates), in which the university offices are closed. There are exceptions for instances when a legal holiday falls on an employee’s regularly scheduled day off (i.e. Saturday or Sunday).

If the legal holidays of January 1, July 4, or December 25 occur on a Sunday, university offices will be closed on the following Monday in observance of the legal holiday. If those legal holidays occur on a Saturday, employees are granted a floating legal holiday.

This year, July 4th (7/4) falls on a Saturday. Therefore, employees will be granted  floating legal holiday to use at their discretion, per supervisor approval.

University staff employees must use the  floating legal holiday hours during the calendar year it is earned. Academic Staff and Limited employees must use the legal holiday hours during the fiscal year it is earned.

Use of floating legal holiday should be reported as “Legal Holiday” on either your timesheet (University Staff) or absence entry (Academic Staff/Limited).
