Employee Spotlight: Jan Snyder

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Here at UW-Green Bay we are familiar with the mission of providing interdisciplinary, problem-focused educational experiences that prepare students to think critically and address complex issues in the world. What happens after they gain all that wonderful knowledge? The day they’ve all waited for: COMMENCEMENT (a.k.a. graduation day)! Behind this glorious day and all the preparation that it entails is the University Services Program Associate within the Office of the Provost, Jan Snyder.

Jan has the wonderful position of planning commencement and coordinating all the activities that go along with it. In addition to this, Jan serves as the University Staff Committee chair and has served on numerous other campus committees. Jan has been an employee at UW-GB for over 20 years, and has over 35 total years in office and administrative support. She has been employed in the departments of Financial Aid, Dean of Students, Education, Humanities, and many more.

When asked to tell us about herself, Jan explained that:

“I grew up in southwest Iowa, the middle of 5 children.  I was a serious student, but also active in sports and music.  I played softball from the time I was 9 until I was 26, played volleyball from junior high until I was 40, played tennis (singles), and liked to run (short distances).  I played the clarinet, oboe, and string bass in junior high and high school.  I was active in band, orchestra, jazz band, and was a majorette during football season.  I twirled baton for about 10 years, including a fire baton at football games and the school talent show.  After we started a family, I was very active at our church for many years, helping with the AWANA kids program, teaching Sunday school and children’s church, directing the crafts program for vacation Bible school, and being known as the ‘snack lady’ for the middle and high school youth program.”

Jan is described as organized, driven and sensitive. Her interests when not planning for campus ceremonies include family, walking, exercising, flower and plant gardening, cross country skiing, and traveling.

Wellness

The UW-Green Bay Wellness Committee Presents:

What: Wellness Lunch and Learn
“Why You Should Hug a Tree”

When: Tuesday, April 28, 2015  **Date & Location Updated**
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Where: 1965 Room, University Union

Protecting the environment is an important part of environmental wellness because it ensures access to clean water and air, but access to the natural environment also provides less tangible health benefits. A growing body of scientific research is showing that interacting with nature has positive and long-lasting health benefits including reduced stress, lower blood pressure, and improvements in mental health. Vicki Medland from The Cofrin Center for Biodiversity will discuss some of the new research on wellness and environment and talk about some of the best places to enjoy the outdoors on our UW—Green Bay natural areas.

Vicki Medland is the Associate Director of the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity where she works with UWGB students, faculty and staff, and community members on biodiversity related projects and teaches courses in environmental science. She has a PhD. in Ecology from the University of Georgia and is on the Board of Directors for the Ridges Sanctuary in Door County.

Student Employment Information

It’s the time of year to think about the student employees you plan to rehire for Summer 2015 and/or Academic Year 2015-2016. Primary supervisors will receive e-mails with spreadsheet attachments containing a list of all active student employees in late April. Through this process you will be able to indicate the terms of rehire (summer only, summer and academic year, academic year only), termination, and indicate changes in funding, hourly rates, and approvers. A due date will also be indicated in the email and spreadsheets not received by the due date may result in termination of student appointments. Please look for this email in late April.

Graduating seniors and those not returning for the fall semester may only work through MAY 15, 2015. This applies to all student employees, work study or regular.

Deadline to Register: Thursday, April 16 (or until all appointments are filled)

In 2015, all state insurance plans are offering $150/member for completing the Well Wisconsin program.  There are two steps to completing the program.

  • Participate in a biometric screening

Get up-to-date testing results on your height, weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI), cholesterol level, glucose measurement, and blood pressure.  At the on-site screening you will be asked to provide proof of insurance (health insurance card).  You will then go through a series of staffed stations for the testing, which generally takes less than 20 minutes.  At the end of the screening you will be given your results.

  • Complete your Health Risk Survey online provided by your health plan

Use your biometric screening results to complete the survey.  Visit http://wellwisconsin.wi.gov and click on your insurance plan in the column to the left for a direct link to the online Health Survey.  This quick, easy survey will ask a range of questions including your daily stress level, family medical history, and typical meal plan.  The Health Survey is designed to help you gauge intangible well-being factors to pinpoint possible health risks.

Once the biometric screening and health survey are completed, the $150 incentive will be processed and issued by your health insurance provider.  Health plan issued rewards are considered a fringe benefit of employment and must be treated as taxable income by the primary subscriber’s employer.  Your health plan is required to report payment information for the subscriber and enrolled family member’s to the subscriber’s employer.  Individual health information will never be shared with the employer.

Even if you are unable to attend the on-site Biometric Screening on April 20th, you can complete the biometric screening portion with your physician (the necessary paper forms for physician’s completion are available under each individual health plan on the Well Wisconsin website).

Please direct any questions to Kimberly Danielson, Benefits Specialist, at (920) 465-2196 or danielsk@uwgb.edu.
