Employee Spotlight: Jill Fermanich

All across campus various positions and duties require employees to utilize OSHA compliance, PPE, and various other safety mechanisms in their day to day work.  Wondering what these acronyms stand for and who is behind the health and safety they represent? Look no further! Environmental Health and Safety are Jill Fermanich’s forte!

As the campus safety manager, Jill is responsible for environmental and occupational safety programs that meet the standards established by federal, state and local authorities. From Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), assessment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) necessary for various tasks, management of campus hazardous waste, and Ergonomic assessments, Jill spends each day ensuring we maintain our EcoU™ commitment!

Jill FermanichSummary of what you do?

I am responsible for developing and maintaining OSHA-compliant safety programs such as laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogen awareness, respiratory protection, etc. as well as providing training in support of these programs. In addition, I provide services such as respiratory fit testing, lab audits, fume hood inspections, consultations on indoor air quality issues, and ergonomic assessments. I also manage the campus hazardous waste program and collect, prepare, inventory and manifest all campus hazardous waste.  I manage several campus waste streams (lamps, batteries, infectious waste, aerosol cans, photographic waste) and prepare annual environmental reports for the WDNR and Wisconsin Emergency Management.  I am also currently the interim sustainability coordinator and serve as a resource for students interested in various sustainability programs or projects on campus.

How long have you been employed?

4 years in this position; have worked at UWGB since 2003

Brief history of employment with UWGB?

Prior to EHS position, I worked for 2 years as an LTE in Facilities Management developing the University’s storm water permitting program, and before that (from 2003 – 2009), I worked as an LTE on the Lower Fox River Watershed Monitoring Program as teacher liaison.

Three words that describe you? quiet, curious, adventurous

Personal interests:

Travel, Nordic skiing, reading, bicycling, canoe/kayaking, camping and pretty much anything outdoors – and especially doing any of these with my family & friends!

Random facts/interests?

I grew up in the Chicago area, and went to Grinnell College after high school graduation.  I traveled extensively in my 20’s and then returned to UW-Madison to get my M.S. degree in soil science and hydrogeology.  I worked at an environmental engineering firm doing soil & groundwater contamination investigations, and subsequently for a regulatory agency overseeing those types of environmental investigations.  I have also worked on priority watershed projects for a county land conservation district.

My husband Kevin is on the faculty here at UW – Green Bay and together we have two children, Lydia and Wes. Lydia is finishing her sophomore year in college, majoring in biology and Spanish, with a minor in community & global health. Wes is a sophomore in high school. He loves math, plays sax, runs cross country & track and is on a Nordic ski team. We’ve had some pretty terrific times together as a family sharing our love of traveling and the outdoors – we’ve hiked and backpacked in the Rockies, the Sierras and the Swiss Alps and have traveled together to New Zealand, Costa Rica, China, Peru and Europe, and have also taken several canoe/camping trips and ski trips together. We now keep ourselves busy (especially Kevin) working on and managing Kevin’s family farm north of New London.

Event Overview
The Future of Higher Education Partnerships
When Gary Miller considers the future of his own industry, higher education, it is impossible to conceptualize the university of tomorrow without a corresponding effort to anticipate the future needs of the city and region.

Since his arrival last summer, UW-Green Bay’s chancellor has spent countless hours meeting with local employers, civic leaders, elected officials, alumni and current students to gather ideas on Green Bay’s future. He views campus and community as full partners in shaping that future. While UW-Green Bay will continue to honor the great traditions of liberal-arts learning, it will survive and thrive only if it embraces the disruptive innovations that challenge those traditions at every turn.

In a rapidly evolving, Innovation Age economy, Miller sees three keys in powering the future:  innovation, the transformative power of education, and regionally focused partnerships.
About the Speaker

Gary L. Miller
Chancellor

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay

Dr. Gary L. Miller began his role as the sixth chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Aug. 1, 2014 and his installation was held Friday, Nov. 14, 2014.

Prior to joining UW-Green Bay, Miller was the fourth chancellor and seventh leader of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. After his arrival at UNCW in July 2011, Dr. Miller spearheaded the university’s focus on three core values: a commitment to the journey of learning, a deep love of place and dedication to the power of ideas and innovation to change lives.

His initiatives have included forming the Chancellor’s Office for Community Partnerships, supporting a number of programs focused on applied learning and the undergraduate academic experience, developing the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, establishing the University Innovation Council, and guiding the growth of the CREST Research Park, among many other endeavors. During his tenure, the university has launched an innovative online nursing program, opened a $30 million-marine biotechnology business development and research building, and received reaccreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Dr. Miller serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), a national higher education organization consisting of public and private colleges across the country that value the importance of teaching, research and service to their communities. He is a member of the National Campus Compact Board and the Executive Board of the North Carolina Campus Compact. He is chair of the Colonial Athletic Association Council of Presidents.

Dr. Miller also serves on the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Committee for Economic and Workforce Development. He is a member of a collaborative steering committee focused on a post-collegiate outcomes initiative funded by the Gates Foundation. The initiative’s partners include the AASCU, the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU), and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACU). He previously participated as a member of the task force that developed the student learning outcomes component of the Voluntary System of Accountability, a joint project of the APLU and the AASCU.

I am originally from Chicago, Illinois, but currently reside in Howard, Wisconsin.
  2. What are you hoping to do post-graduation (career, more school, etc.)?
After graduation, my career goal is to work in a Human Resources department. My plan is to take the exam to obtain my HR certification as well. 4. Do you have a favorite quote?
While this could be a quote, I view it as more of a motto. Either way, it is certainly something that I have lived by…NEVER GIVE UP! There are times in my life where the easiest thing would have been to give up, but I have always been determined to keep pushing through the challenges.
  5.  What do you like to do in your spare time?
When I have spare time, most of it is spent having fun and making memories with my children. From taking a walk to watching a movie, playing rounds of laser tag, going on a road trip, or watching them play sports, they keep life interesting and very busy. There is usually never a dull moment!
  6.  What’s on your bucket list?
A personal bucket list item, which I will finally be able to cross off in December 2015, is to graduate from college!  A family bucket list item is to travel with my children and see all of the states. I have two boys who love sports, so it is a goal of ours to visit, or at least take a picture by the sports stadiums in each state.
