AseraCare Hospice is looking for volunteers to help with their patients. They provide amazing hospice services to our surrounding area. One of the awesome options they give their patients besides the nursing care is the ability to have a volunteer come spend time with them. The volunteers are able to provide companionship, emotional support, vigil support, pet companionship and bereavement support. They are looking for caring souls in the area that would like to volunteer with AseraCare.

The annual Gourmet Wishes event to benefit Make-A-Wish^® Wisconsin will take place on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.  It is a wonderful evening with nearly 40 of the area’s finest restaurants, bakeries and beverage companies who participate and serve their best. There will also be an impressive silent and live auction, inspiring program featuring local wish children & much more!

We need the help of MANY volunteers the day of the event to assist our light company in getting all their equipment to and from their trucks. This is not hard or heavy work, it just requires a lot of walking and pushing carts. We need volunteers from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. as well as from 8 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.

Your support will help us reach our important goal of granting a life-affirming wish for every medically qualified child!  We are currently on pace to grant at least 380 wishes this year – more than a wish a day! The gift of a wish has a profound impact on the children we serve and their families.  For many, their wish marks a turning point in the fight against their illness!

Junior Achievement is looking for just under 100 volunteers to go into classrooms throughout Brown County and help educate the students about business related topics. You would be going into the classrooms during February, March, and April. If you are unsure of the time committment, perhaps you can co-teach! You and your partner could each take 2 visits and share the last one.

National Railroad Museum

The National Railroad Museum is in need of volunteers for Holidays on the Rails which starts Monday, December 5 and runs through Saturday, December 10.  Volunteers are needed from 8am – 2:30pm each day of the event. This special program features fun activities and crafts, cookie decorating, a train ride, and a visit with Santa! Holiday on the Rails is open to the public and school groups.This program is designed for children pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade. Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization that started with a mission “to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” The official start of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Brown County program started in 1977 but it was unofficially started in 1972 by the YMCA and 1974 by the YWCA. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program is supported by donors and volunteers who are matched up with local youth in the community. This program is the largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the U.S. Bigs are paired with a child between the ages of 7 and 13 and are asked to spend a few hours a week for at least one year to help impact the child’s life. You can be a Big starting at 16 and do it as a single person or a couple. The impact of being a BIG is tremendous on the children. Youth who are paired with a Big are 52% more likely to remain in school and 75% more likely to earn a 4-year degree. Have some free time this summer? Want to make an impact in your community? Why not volunteer and help those in need? There are so many ways to get involved in the community from working with animals, the environment, veterans, housing, education, and the list goes on. Each month we will highlight one organization where you can volunteer your time and talent.

Before we dig deeper into specific organizations, we wanted to provide a few resources available to you to find out how you can start volunteering. Our HR website has a Volunteer Opportunities page with some great links for these resources. To get to that page, go to uwgb.edu/hr/employees/volunteer. Each month we will have a Featured Volunteer Opportunity where you can learn more about a specific organization. If you are passionate about a cause but don’t know what specific organization shares that passion, you can visit The Volunteer Center of Brown County’s website. There you can select a cause and it will show you some of the organizations that would love the help of volunteers. If you prefer to share your talents outside of Brown County there are volunteer resources available for other area communities as well. If you just want to volunteer and are not sure exactly where to start, you can try volunteermatch.org. This website will also help you find places that need volunteers but also will show you who has activities going on in the coming days if you want to try something different every time or support an organization’s activity.

Interested in getting involved in the local community and mentoring what may become a future UW-Green Bay student?  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Wisconsin is looking for UW-Green Bay faculty, staff and students to participate in any of the programs they offer to Impact the lives of children in the greater Green Bay area.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) offers two types of programs:

Site-Based Program: with just one hour per week, you can have a lifelong impact on a child’s life.  Meet one hour each week for 12 months at a childs school or after-school facility. You can choose the day and time that works best for you.

Community-Based Program: mentors meet two times per month with a 12 month commitment and provide children 1 to 1 interactions with the community. These low-cost activities provide youth with a mentor; many see this as the highlight of their week.  You can also co-mentor a child with your spouse as a Big Couple!
