An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) analyzes the heart’s electrical rhythm for abnormalities. When needed, and AED administers a shock, called defibrillation, to a person suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. The shock may help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm and can increase the chance of survival. Every minute counts.Even the fastest ambulance response rates in the U.S. are not sufficient to give most Sudden Cardiac Arrest victims a fighting chance–unless an AED is readily available. Victims’ survival chances drop by 10% for every minute that passes, while an AED can increase survival chances from 5% to as high as 75%. The University has recently added several AED’s providing for over 30 across the campus. Come to this session and get informed about how to properly use an AED in an emergency situation. |
