Featured Student: Shontrea Hogans

1. When will you graduate?
 I will be graduating in May of 2020.

2. What are your career plans? 
My career plan is to hopefully be a multicultural advisor for higher education students.

3. Why did you major in psychology? 
My mother had majored in psychology when she was in school, wanting to follow in her footsteps, I started to spark an interest in the subject. After that I have fell in love with the subject ever sense. I am passionate about how the mind, emotions, and human behavior all plays into human existence.

4. What do you do for fun?
I love to read romance/supernatural novels, and painting.

5. What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the progress I have made during my college experience. My freshman year started off rocky, but my academic excellence has grown over the years. I am also proud of the leader that I have become, and the opportunities that come with that role.

6. What’s your favorite movie, book, and TV show related to psychology?
I love the TV show Dexter.

7. What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating?
I hope to help make a change in the lives of multicultural students here on this campus, by opening up paths, opportunities, and social outlets for them. Hopefully accomplishing a foundation for future multicultural students to build upon.

8. What else do you want people to know about you? 
I am the Co-President of the multicultural sorority, Psi Theta Nu, here on campus.

Featured Student: Savannah Bruecker

1. When will you graduate?  I will graduate in December of 2017.

2. What are your career plans? I plan to attend a pre-master’s program in communication sciences and disorders. After, I plan to attend a master’s program in Speech and Language Pathology.

3. Why did you major in psychology? I majored in psychology because I wanted to learn more about why people behave the way they do.

4. What do you do for fun? I like to spend time with my friends and family, spend time on my farm, go up north, and hunt.

5. What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? I am most proud of is being a research assistant and being able to contribute to moral development research on children.

6. What’s your favorite movie, book, and TV show related to psychology? This is a tough question, but I think I would go with the following:
Book: The Glass Castle
Movie: Wonder
TV show: Parenthood

7. What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating? I hope to continue researching the effects of the environment on task performance and memory, as well as moral development in children.

8. What else do you want people to know about you? I have been a mentor at Big Brothers Big Sisters for the past two years.

Featured Alumni: Taylor Stelter

1. When did you graduate? I graduated in May 2016 with a major in psychology and a minor in human development.

2. What do you do now? I am currently a treatment alternatives and diversion case manager for a monitoring agency called JusticePoint. My clients include deferred prosecution defendants in Milwaukee County.

3. Why did you major in psychology? I majored in psychology because I have always been intrigued by human behavior specifically within the criminal justice population (brought to you by Criminal Minds). I tend to get bored easily and psychology has always kept my interest one way or another.

4. What do you do for fun? I love hanging out with my little brothers, eating Culver’s kids meals, and staying active by running and weight lifting.

5. What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? The academic experience I am most proud of is participating in the PSI Talks in 2016. I loved the concept of sharing my internship experiences and explaining their connection in the criminal justice system.

6. What’s your favorite movie, book, and TV show, related to psychology? Some of my favorite TV shows related to psychology include Criminal Minds, Dexter, and Mind Hunter.

7. What is an important goal or accomplishment you are currently working on? An important goal I am currently working on is enrolling in graduate school. I would like to pursue a Master’s Degree with an emphasis in Community Counseling in hopes of becoming a correctional counselor.

Featured Student: Ana Lundquist

1. When will you graduate? Spring 2018
2. What are your career plans? I plan to get a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and counsel people with mental illness.
3. Why did you major in psychology? I really enjoy learning about how the brain functions. I am fascinated by what can go right and what can go wrong in the human mind. I love learning about mental illness and can’t wait to put my knowledge into practice to help others.
4. What do you do for fun? I enjoy reading, watching movies, playing video games, and listening to music. I love to spend time with my boyfriend, family, and friends.
5. What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? I am most proud of being a Big Buddy for Camp Lloyd. I learned a lot about childhood grief and was happy to use my knowledge practically. I really enjoyed working with the kids and it felt great to make a difference in the life of a child.
6. What’s your favorite movie, book, and TV show related to psychology? My favorite book related to psychology is “Pleading Insanity” by Andrew Archer. My favorite TV show(loosely) related to psychology is Stitchers, even though it’s not totally accurate. My favorite movie related to psychology by far is the newest “The Stanford Prison Experiment” movie.
7. What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating? I hope to encourage a fellow student to keep chasing their educational goals, no matter how difficult it may seem.
8. What else do you want people to know about you? I am a Resident Assistant on campus. It is a job that has really helped me break out of my shell. It allows me to make an impact on other students’ lives.

Featured Student: Taylor Gulbrand

1. When will you graduate? I will graduate in Spring 2019

2. What are your career plans? Well, for a while I was convinced that I wanted to be a school counselor, but now I’m rethinking things. Most recently I have been considering going to grad school to get my Master’s degree in social work.

3. Why did you major in psychology? I love learning about why humans do the things they do and how they develop and grow. I am also majoring in human development so I think that those two together really cover all of my interests.

4. What do you do for fun? In my spare time I enjoy catching up on Netflix, being crafty, singing show tunes, learning how to tap dance, and spending time with my friends!

5. What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? I am proud of being a “Big Buddy” for Camp Lloyd last spring. Camp provides a safe environment for children grieving the death of a loved one to explore their emotions and experiences of grief. Being a “Big Buddy” mentor for camp has honestly, without a doubt, changed my life.

6. What’s your favorite movie, book, and TV show related to psychology? There are quite a few movies related to psychology that I enjoy like Inside Out, Split, and The Silence of the Lambs. A tv show related to psychology that I really like is Riverdale.

7. What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating? I hope to become more involved with the psychology department, especially within Psi Chi and PsycHD.

8. What else do you want people to know about you? In addition to majoring in psychology and human development, I have a minor in music with an emphasis of vocal performance!

Featured Student: Amanda Salewski

1. When will you graduate? Spring 2018
2. What are your career plans? As of now I’m looking at graduate programs in the mountains! I would like to take a year off to get settled and find a job or internship in whatever new area I choose.
3. Why did you major in psychology? I knew I loved working with kids so I started at NWTC in the Early Childhood Ed. program. In my children with differing abilities class we toured an autism center and Syble Hopp, and I fell in love with the kids. I decided I wanted to work with the children who need love and attention the most, so I transferred here and have loved the field ever since.
4. What do you do for fun? I’ve been drawing and painting a lot more lately since it’s getting colder. It really helps me relax from all the stresses of school and life in general. When the weathers nice, I love to be outside either hiking in the UP or whitewater rafting!
5. What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? I’m definitely most proud of the time I’ve spent working with Camp Lloyd the past 2 summers, and soon to be a third! I can’t even explain the love I have for the children I’ve met or the impact they’ve made. In working with grieving children, watching them grow and create new hopes for their futures has taught me so much about myself and the world.
6. What’s your favorite movie, book, and TV show related to psychology? My favorite TV show is the It’s Always Sunny episode where Dee makes all the guys go to her therapist to decide who should have to do the dishes. My favorite book is a tie between The Glass Castle and Grief Girl. And I’m not sure this one counts, but we watched Mean Girls in my intro to psych class in high school.
7. What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating? So far I’m pretty proud of myself and my accomplishments at UWGB. I’m also extremely grateful to be a RA for the culture lab, and be able to be apart of some of the research studies taking place here. I hope to finish the year off strong with the most experiences and connections that will benefit my future.
8. What else do you want people to know about you? I just really love this field, especially paired with my major in human development. The past couple years here have helped me discover so much more about myself than I ever could

Featured Student: Josh Heimerl

1. When will you graduate? I will be graduating this upcoming spring semester in May. Can’t come fast enough!
2. What are your career plans? What I am striving to accomplish is to be a school counselor.
3. Why did you major in psychology? Why I majored in psychology is because I have always been very curious with why people think the way they do and why they react to certain behaviors. Also, the brain has always interested me and I love to learn about it.
4. What do you do for fun? For fun I love to run because it helps me clear a lot of stress from my mind. But what I love to do the most is to curl. Yes, the winter Olympic sport where people scream at one another to sweep. You all should try it! I have been curling for 11 years now and have traveled across the country to do tournaments and camps.
5. What academic experience or accomplishment are you most proud of? The accomplishment I have been most proud of academically is being a research assistant and being able to help run sessions using the EEG system we have on campus.
6. What’s your favorite movie, book, and TV show related to psychology? My favorite movie is A Beautiful Mind because it shows how powerful schizophrenia is, but how successful someone with such a disability can be. My favorite book is called Memory Man. The main character suffers a traumatic football injury that forced his brain to uniquely trigger his memory to never forget anything, also known as synaesthesia. My favorite TV show is without a doubt Criminal Minds. This show captivates my interest with the behaviors of the suspects and what triggers their brain to cause harm.
7. What single thing do you hope to accomplish at UWGB before graduating? I hope to continue my independent research on Grit- your passion and perseverance striving to achieve your long-term goals and to give presentations on my research.
8. What else do you want people to know about you? I grew up with three brothers, one of them being my fraternal twin.
