Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning [Book]Want to dive deeper into the ideas and insights on AI in education Dr. C. Edward Watson presented on Aug. 29, 2024? CATL is sponsoring small book groups this fall semester centered around his book, Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning. These groups will meet three times during the Fall 2024 semester, each focusing on a specific theme, such as asynchronous online teaching or history instruction. Meeting times and dates will be arranged based on participant availability.

The book is available via free online access through the UWGB library. Physical copies are also available for the first 30 full-time UWGB instructors who register!

 

LITE 350: Teaching with an Equity Lens

Learning and Integrating Technology for Education (LITE) 350: Teaching with an Equity Lens is a semester-long community of practice where participants work their way through the Peralta Equity Rubric. Participants focus on one class they teach and apply elements like technology, Universal Design for Learning, and connection and belonging practices while seeking feedback from colleagues to create an equitable class experience for all students.

Prerequisites: Completion of LITE 101 is required; completion of LITE 201 is recommended.

Participants will earn a digital badge for completing LITE 350 that you can include in your email signature or embed in online portfolios or resumes as evidence of your commitment to professional development!

Full-time instructors may also be eligible for a $250 stipend if they successfully complete the course within the semester.*

*Only full-time instructors for the 2024-25 AY are eligible for compensation. To receive compensation, participants must receive approval from their unit chair. Instructors who have already met their maximum overload payment for the contract period do not qualify for compensation.

Teaching with Technology Certificate (LITE 101, 201, & 301 Courses)

The Teaching with Technology Certificate program consists of three courses that act as steps in the certification sequence: Learning and Integrating Technology for Education (LITE) 101, LITE 201, and LITE 301. Participants will earn a badge after completing the first and second courses in the sequence, and the Teaching with Technology Certificate after completing the third course. Full-time instructors who complete the second and third courses may also be eligible for a stipend.

CATL on the MOO-ve: College Drop-In Hours

CATL is bringing our services to you with more College Drop-in Hours this fall! Each week, one of CATL’s instructional designers, instructional technologists, or our Canvas administrator will be holding drop-in hours in each of the four colleges on the Green Bay campus, with additional virtual offerings.

  • CAHSS & CSET drop-in hours | Mondays, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
  • CSB drop-in hours | Tuesdays, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • CHESW drop-in hours | Wednesdays, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

2024 Election: Free Speech, Politics, & The Classroom

Prepare for the upcoming election season by attending a session on the intersection between higher education and politics on Friday, Sept. 6, at 9:30 a.m. in MAC 206 and via Zoom. Experts from the Provost’s Office, Dean of Students Office, Policy & Compliance, and CATL will respond to your questions and invite you to engage with case scenarios that could arise in your own classroom.

Join CATL for open computer lab time where you can experiment with technology that can enhance your teaching, see live demonstrations, and get your questions answered.

Co-Writing Community

Tara DaPra, one of CATL’s Instructional Development Consultants, will lead another “Co-Writing Community” this fall via Zoom from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. on Fridays. A co-writing community is a zero-obligation, zero-preparation, zero-outside work activity. Use this time to work on creative or scholarly projects that might otherwise get pushed aside by the demands of teaching. All faculty and staff are welcome!

Open Lab Time with CATL (Friday, Aug. 30, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

Apply to Present at the 2024 Instructional Development Institute (Applications Due Monday, Nov. 6; IDI is Jan. 9, 2024)

Welcome to the UW-Green Bay Instructional Development Institute (IDI) Call for Proposals page!

The Instructional Development Institute takes place each January and is hosted by the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) and the Instructional Development Council. Part of what contributes to the excitement surrounding the IDI is the active involvement and collaboration from UWGB faculty, staff, and community partners as conference presenters. Every fall, CATL and the Instructional Development Council (IDC) invite UWGB faculty and staff to submit proposals for the IDI, encouraging them to share their experiences, research, and instructional approaches with the broader educational community.

Introduction to IDI Theme

Higher education has witnessed substantial challenges in recent years. Instructors and students faced COVID-19, the ensuing dramatic shift to pandemic pedagogy, and all that came with it. Institutions confronted budget, enrollment, and political pressures, and they are now grappling with emerging generative AI technologies and their impact on education. Amid such disruptions, it can be easy to approach our work with a mentality of survival. This year’s Instructional Development Institute instead challenges you to consider what it would mean not simply to survive, but to thrive in higher education. While there are no easy answers, we can work together as educators to set goals, support one another, surmount obstacles, and achieve at a high level, similar to the expectations we have for our students. Join your colleagues and keynote speaker Dr. Kevin Gannon, author of the book Radical Hope, as we reflect on ways to thrive as educators and help students to do the same.

Call for Proposals

CATL and the Instructional Development Council at UW-Green Bay are now accepting applications for the all-virtual Instructional Development Institute (IDI) on January 9, 2024. This year’s theme is “Thriving in Higher Education.” We encourage submissions highlighting creative educational strategies and practices that correspond with the conference theme, such as supporting student access; teaching effectively with technology; using innovative pedagogies; building learning communities; promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion; managing instructor bandwidth, and more.

There are different ways to participate, so please apply for the session format that you believe is best for your proposed session. Collaborators from other institutions are welcome to join UW-Green Bay employees as proposal co-authors. Although the primary audience for session proposals should be fellow UWGB faculty and staff members, keep in mind that we will also open conference registration to other UW System schools and to all educators. We are pleased and fortunate that our keynote speaker, Dr. Kevin Gannon, will be leading two distinct workshops in addition to the keynote address. As a result, there will be fewer presentation slots available compared to previous years.
