Fun in the Sun
Finals week is almost over, and students at UW-Green Bay are pushing through the last stretch of the semester. It’s a time filled with late-night study sessions, papers, presentations, and plenty of caffeine. But just beyond the stress and deadlines, summer is waiting — with open skies, warm weather, and the freedom to finally take a breath.
As students prepare to cross the finish line, it’s exciting to think about what comes next. When exams are done and backpacks are stored away, it’s time to embrace fun in the sun, and all the joy, adventure, and relaxation that comes with it.
Get Active: Water, Sun, and Movement
With the weather warming up, summer is your invitation to get moving — outside of the gym. Try kayaking or paddleboarding on the Fox River or the waters of Green Bay, both accessible through local rentals. Organize a friendly game of beach volleyball, join a community yoga class at CityDeck, or just toss a frisbee around with friends. Even a walk through downtown or a bike ride along the Fox River Trail can be refreshing when the sun is out and responsibilities are few.
Summer Socials and Bonfires
After a long semester of studying, or stress, there’s something extra special about just being with people. Host a backyard barbecue, join a community concert or farmer’s market, or plan a stargazing night on a clear evening. If you’re staying in the Green Bay area, keep an eye on local events like Free Music Fridays, ArtStreet, or Dine on the Deck. And nothing beats a classic bonfire on the beach. Just bring s’mores, a playlist, and some bug spray.
Sun-Soaked Self-Care
Sometimes, fun in the sun doesn’t have to be packed with activity. It can be as simple as lying in the grass with your headphones on, painting on the porch, writing in your journal, or taking an afternoon nap in a sunbeam. After weeks of finals stress, it’s important to give yourself permission to rest intentionally. Vitamin D, fresh air, and quiet time can do wonders for your mental health.
Tips for Safe Summer Fun
- Sunscreen is non-negotiable: Reapply often!
- Stay hydrated: Bring a reusable water bottle wherever you go.
- Plan around the heat: Try outdoor activities in the morning or evening to avoid peak heat.
- Protect your eyes and skin: Hats and sunglasses are both stylish and smart.
Summer is short, and for UWGB students, it’s a well-earned reward after months of dedication. Whether you’re graduating and stepping into your next chapter or simply looking forward to a break before fall, this season offers a rare chance to reconnect with yourself, with nature, and with your community. Get outside, feel the sun on your face, and celebrate everything you’ve accomplished. Whether you’re chasing waves, reading by the bay, or laughing under a star-filled sky, one thing’s for sure: this is your time. Make the most of it.
