GREEN BAY, Wis — All who love a Viking tale are invited to celebrate the book launch of The Viking House Saga: A Journey into Experiential Archeology at UW-Green Bay, co-authored by Dr. Heidi Sherman and Dr. Owen Christianson.

The event takes place on October 4th in Wood Hall 215 at 4:30 pm and will be streamed via Zoom. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Guests can RSVP here.

Equal parts heartfelt memoir, practical construction guide, cookbook, and educational lesson plan, The Viking House Saga: A Journey into Experiential Archeology at UW-Green Bay chronicles how the Viking House was built by Christianson and became the site of hands-on learning and community engagement through the work of Sherman, a UWGB history professor.

The book will also be sold during the Midwest Viking Festival on October 6-7. Dr. Sherman directs the festival, which draws thousands to the UW-Green Bay campus for activities, crafts, and re-enactments.

Christianson’s contributions to the book include blueprints for the assembly of the house.

“My wife and I wanted to create a facility that closely duplicates life during the Viking Age, and we wanted to share our re-creation of Viking Age life with others.”

“Ultimately, I wanted to build something challenging, to really experience being alive.”

The Viking House Saga: A Journey into Experiential Archeology at UW-Green Bay was designed, edited, and published by UW-Green Bay’s Teaching Press.

For Sherman, the student-managed publishing house was a natural fit for the book.

“I enjoyed working with the Teaching Press. Owen and I weren’t at all sure how to make the book work, and the Teaching Press student interns did a great job of pulling things together.”
