We are proud to announce that applications are now being accepted to MSN-LINC, our new online Master of Science (MSN) Leadership and Management in Health Systems.  MSN-LINC is intended for RNs holding a BSN degree in nursing who desire advanced coursework in leadership and management to improve care at multiple levels across the continuum of healthcare settings.  Priority applications are being accepted through April 1, 2013 for enrollment in courses starting in the Fall Semester of 2013.   Additional applications may be accepted after the priority date if course sections have not been filled.

Additionally, we are pleased to announce that Nurses Lounge, the professional social network for nurses, has created a $1000 scholarship. All MSN applicants accepted into the program as of July 1 will be entered into a drawing to win the scholarship.  The winner must agree to register for 6 credits for Fall Semester, 2013.  The scholarship proceeds will be applied to tuition.

BSN-LINC student Mark Hunter was a featured speaker at the spring 2012 Canadian Vascular Access Association conference concerning the importance of nursing diagnosis.  After delivering the lecture, he was asked to submit a manuscript.  Mark and his wife, Andrea co-authored a manuscript which is being published in the Canadian Vascular Access Association Journal.  The manuscript, “Reducing the Risk for Infection: Nursing Diagnosis” is an article focusing on the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association International (NANDA I) findings and the critical role nursing diagnosis plays in improving patient safety and saving lives. Mark also was asked to co-author a chapter in the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) book called “Biofilm Control in Drug Manufacturing”. The Chapter was created to help explain the risk of contamination in drug manufacturing and how it could affect patients.  In the chapter, Mark advocates using the nursing diagnosis of risk for infection.  The book is now available through the PDA association.  Mark notified professors Susan Gallagher-Lepak and Heather Herdman of his articles as he was in their fall 2010 class “Nursing Diagnosis Across the Globe” and writes, “I have to admit that I’ve sent the information partly because I’m extremely proud of both of these accomplishments, but also just to express my thoughts of the importance of nursing diagnosis and the class that is offered through UWGB!  Thank you!”  Our congratulations to Mark! Marshfield Clinic (Marshfield, WI) is proud to announce the funding of a scholarship program that will benefit multiple BSN nursing students.  Total awards will be $3000.  In order to be eligible, students must be accepted into the University’s nursing program starting fall of 2013 and demonstrate financial need using the eligibility criteria found on the application.  Preference may be given to applicants who are current or former Marshfield Clinic employees or family members of employees and/or those whose permanent address is within the clinic’s service area.  Funds will be paid in the student’s name directly to the University in the fall of 2013.  Contact UW-Green Bay Nursing Advisor, Jennifer Schwahn for an application and eligibility information at schwahnj@uwgb.edu or 920/465-2934.  Applications must be returned to Deanna Burt, Division of Education, Marshfield Clinic by March 18, 2013.

Marina An has traveled a unique road to become a nurse. She came to the United States from Russia about seven years ago. In Russia, she had worked in a variety of fields including civil engineering, human resources, accounting and business. Because her credentials were not valid in America, she faced a dilemma about which career to pursue. Her sister, an anesthesiologist in Russia, suggested healthcare. Marina found that, unlike in Russia where a nurse is considered a maid of the physician, a nurse in America is an independent professional who requires a broad scope of knowledge and skills. She began working as a nurses aid while pursuing nursing education at Western Technical College in 2009. She learned about being in a healthcare setting while advancing to a nurse technician, LPN and completing her ADN in 2011.

After becoming a Registered Nurse, Marina set the personal goal of becoming a highly qualified professional in order to provide the best and safest care to clients. She realized with the increasing complexity of healthcare and rapidly expanding body of nursing knowledge, she needed a deeper knowledge of nursing practice, management and leadership skills. Marina is now a student in the UW-Green Bay BSN@HOME online track seeking her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is employed by Norseland Nursing Home, Westby, WI and at Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare, Sparta, WI. She fines that the online program allows her the flexibility necessary with her busy schedule of work, family and studies.

Marina is an excellent example of the diversity of our student population that enriches learning for everyone in the program. Program Highlights

• The program is completely online and allows nurses working and with multiple commitments to complete graduate education.  It is accessible to nurses everywhere including in rural and underserved areas. 
• The curriculum consists of 12 graduate level courses delivered via a part time model.  Students can complete the program in 6 semesters (Fall, Spring & Summer) over two years with two courses offered each semester. 
• Degree completion requirements include 34 credits of coursework including 9 credits of practicum (504 hours). Practicum experiences will be arranged with healthcare facilities close to students’ homes or work sites. 
• A thesis option is not planned.  The final practicum includes a capstone project and will be presented in a format for public dissemination (e.g., manuscript for publication).

Entrance Requirements

• This master’s degree is intended for RNs holding a bachelor’s degree in nursing.  Current RN licensure required.  GPA of 3.0 (measured on a 4.0 scale) or higher in BSN program. 
• Graduate application must be submitted with undergraduate transcripts and evidence of receiving a grade of “C” or better in a college level inferential statistics course within the last five years. 
• Entrance exams (e.g., GRE or MAT) are not required. 
• A computer with Windows 7 or MAC OSX v10.7 (or higher); current Internet browser, high speed Internet access, audio and video capabilities (headset, microphone, speakers and webcam).

The Kappa Pi Chapter-at-Large of Sigma Theta Tau International of the Bellin College, School of Nursing and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Professional Program in Nursing invites nurses, undergraduate and graduate nursing students and other healthcare professionals to the 4th Biennial Scholarship Day 2012.  The program is scheduled for Friday, November 9th in the Alumni Rooms and 1965 Room of the University Union on the UW-Green Bay campus.  The schedule includes:

Dr. Christine Vandenhouten, Assistant Professor, invites all Nursing students, alumni and community members to join her to travel to Cuernavaca, Mexico – the city of Eternal Spring – from January 5-19, 2013.  Participants will learn about the Mexican Healthcare system, hear from a Mexican “Partera” or Midwife about delivering babies, explore traditional healing methods, visit cultural sites and immerse yourself in the Spanish language.  There is no language pre-requisite. Whether you are fluent or don’t speak any Spanish, there is a language class designed for you.  This course is for anyone who is interested in improving their ability to work with patients whose primary language is Spanish.

Nursing students can earn three credits (course 499) to fulfill either World Culture, Therapeutic Nursing Intervention, Special Topics in Nursing, or partial credit toward Community Health Practicum.  (An independent project to be completed by March 31, 2013 will follow the trip for students wishing the three credits.)   Cost is $2860 for airfare (out of Green Bay), meals, lodging, entrance fees, excursions and instruction.  There is also $165 International Education Application for a total cost of $3025.
