Riley Garbe first came to UW-Green Bay as a fifth-grader on a Phuture Phoenix field trip, where a visit to the campus turned into a dream of one day graduating from college. Despite surviving a difficult childhood that included witnessing abuse and violence and moving from home-to-home, Garbe entered the University on a Phuture Phoenix scholarship. He was recognized by the Alumni Association as the University’s Most Outstanding Student at the Fall 2017 Commencement. He was also nominated and selected from all graduates as the student commencement speaker.
Riley’s Commencement speech is definitely one worth listening to! Here are his remarks to his fellow graduates, which were interrupted by applause and drew an emotional standing ovation from fellow classmates, friends and family in attendance.
Look for birds and you may find Tom Erdman ’86 (Population Dynamics) and many of his proteges. The recently retired Richter Museum curator was working with a team to safely trap and secure snowy owls to be examined, fitted with a transmitter and released. The work is part of Project SNOWstorm. Research started in late 2013 to study the habits and assist with conservation of the big, beautiful white birds. UW-Green Bay alumnus Tom Prestby ’16 (Environmental Science and Policy) (pictured) is among the snowy trackers. Dave Brinker ’77 (Science and Environmental Change) is the lead scientist. Paul Smith from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel describes the people, the process and the importance.
In preparation for their appearance with the Gangneung Philharmonic Orchestra during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, duo-pianists Sylvia Hong and Michael Rector present works by Poulenc, Ravel and Mozart.
Mon., Feb. 5, 2018 @ 6:30pm. Free to attend.

Coming in Spring 2018…
The Career Closet: Dressing UW-Green Bay Students for Success!
UW-Green Bay students will be able to dress professionally for interviews and job fair events with the help of a new resource to be launched by Career Services in spring 2018 – the Career Closet. Career Services is starting this program so students who are struggling financially will not need to carry the additional financial burden of purchasing business attire as they prepare for interviews, job fairs and internships.
Please consider donating new and gently used suits, pants, dress shirts, blouses, suit/sport jackets, skirts, dresses, scarves, neckties and belts. Attire should be clean and in excellent condition (no buttons missing, tears or broken zippers) and may be dropped off in Career Services during regular office hours, Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
