UW-Green Bay Theatre and Dance welcomes ALL current UWGB students to participate in all aspects of production work. Theatre & Dance majors and minors are expected to work on at least one production each semester to further the techniques and methods being taught in their coursework.

Production Information:

Directed by Alan Kopischke

First Rehearsal: Monday, September 11th

Tech Rehearsals: Saturday, October 28th through Wednesday, November 1st

Public Performances: November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at 7:30pm

WITF Showcase Performance: November 16th

Measure for Measure will be considered for participation in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. The Region 3 Festival will take place January 10th through January 14th, 2024 in Flint, Michigan. Should the production be invited to the Festival, all participants will be expected to attend.

CASTING INFORMATION

The Bohemians – Lucio, Elbow, Froth, Overdone, Pompey – will be portrayed as Trans, Nonbinary, and outrageously presenting members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Other roles will be cast with an open eye regarding the gender identity of both character & actor, but the gender identity of the role will be a consideration for some characters.

In sum, audition for the role(s) you want regardless of gender identity.

Although there are no scenes of intimacy, the scenes between Angelo & Isabella are fraught with sexual tension and threat. The Bohemians are notable for their casual and open approach to physicality and sexuality. There will be some playfully flirtatious interactions (including some touch) between them.

Please consider all of the above as you prepare to audition in September.

The Setting: Venice Township, Michigan – the 1920s

AVAILABLE ROLES

  • Duke Vincentio – Ruler (Mayor?) for many years of Venice, a community with strict moral laws that have not been enforced in many years. The Duke is authoritative, driven, clever, manipulative and charming. A large and demanding role.
  • Isabella – A young pledge to the nunnery. Isabella is strict and unforgiving, smart and persuasive. A large and demanding role.
  • Angelo – An aide to the Duke. Reputed to be unimpeachably moral and dedicated to strict adherence to the law. But power and lust can change things. A large and demanding role.
  • Lucio – A frivolous, hilarious member of the common folk and the queer community. Daringly witty and mocking. A large role.
  • Escalus – An aide to the Duke. Highly efficient and cautious, loyal and reserved. A moderately large role.
  • Provost – The Duke’s chief law and order aide. An efficient and empathetic person of integrity. A moderately large role.
  • Pompey – A bumbling and hilarious bawd (procurer, pimp) and member of the common folk and the queer community. Much like the Thenardiers in Les Miz, but not smart. A moderately large role.
  • Claudio – Isabella’s brother. An earnest young man who has impregnated his fiancee. His death sentence for this ‘crime’ terrifies him. A moderately large, but emotionally demanding role.
  • Elbow – A bumbling and hilarious constable and member of the common folk and the queer community. Similar to Dogberry in Much Ado about Nothing. A smaller, but significant role.
  • Mariana – Angelo’s former betrothed. Loyal and loving, long-suffering and kind. A smaller, but significant role
  • Friar Peter – Close friend of the Duke’s. Loyal and upright. Indignant over injustices. A smaller, but significant role.
  • Mistress Overdone – The proprietor of the Venice Jazz Joint (VJJ) and member of the common folk and the queer community. VJJ is both jazz club and brothel. Overdone is over the top and over the hill. A smaller, but significant role.
  • Froth – An aimless but witty person of some means who prefers to hang out with the common folk and is a member of the queer community. A smaller role.
  • Juliet – Claudio’s very pregnant fiancee. Despondent over Claudio’s death sentence. A smaller role.
  • Abhorson – The Duke’s executioner of few words. Blunt, intimidating. A smaller role.

At Auditions:

Monologues from Measure for Measure will be available to read.

You give yourself the best chance at securing a more substantial role if you come prepared with:

  • a memorized monologue of Shakespearean verse (prose is fine if auditioning for a smaller role)
  • (next best chance) a memorized monologue by another playwright as well as a prepared reading of a Shakespeare monologue
  • (next best chance) a memorized monologue by another playwright as well as a cold reading of a Shakespeare monologue
  • (next best chance) a cold reading of a Shakespeare monologue

The above is the hierarchy of what is likely to be most effective, but all are encouraged to audition and will be given a full opportunity to secure a role.

More than a dozen possible Measure for Measure audition monologues are available in their cut version. A verse monologue (identifiable by capital letters at the beginning of each line) is recommended for larger roles. Please contact Director Alan Kopischke (kopsicha@uwgb.edu) if you would like to arrange a time over the summer to help select or work on an audition monologue.

CALLBACKS:

Intimacy Disclosure Form

Rehearsals: Jan. 23-26, Jan. 30—Feb. 3. 1-2 Zoom rehearsals may be required during the J-term, but scheduled around everyone’s availability.

Synopsis: Caroline, a vulnerable young woman, is haunted by her traumatic past. Having recently escaped her parent’s authoritarian grasp and religious values, she is finally starting to process her experiences. Marshal, the memory of Caroline’s manipulative ex-partner and abuser, stands in the way of her ability to gain closure. Abuse, addiction, and accountability come to a head as the two battle for control

Content Warning

Please be aware that this play discusses childhood sexual abuse, addiction, religious trauma, parental neglect, domestic violence, and grooming. This play contains strong language, kissing, physical aggression, and depictions of sexual violence. We plan to consult an intimacy coordinator for the project.

Character Descriptions:

  • Caroline Barnette: Female. 19. Mature and intelligent. Suffers from PTSD. She’s self-conscious and extremely careful about her outward appearance. She is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, grooming, domestic violence, and parental neglect. She struggles with the affection she previously held for her childhood abuser, Marshal, and subconsciously wonders if she is to blame for some of her trauma. She’s a former Catholic and she has a difficult relationship with her parents.
  • Marshal: 19. Manipulative and Calculated. He is a heady blend of polished suburban son, dangerous bad boy, and dark romantic. He has a difficult relationship with his parents and community, and a history of struggling with unhealthy coping mechanisms. One such mechanism manifested as a perverse need to control Caroline. As a memory, Marshal has access to the most troubling information in Caroline’s head and frequently uses her struggles against her.

Production Dates: April 20-22 and April 26

Directed by Alan Kopiscke

NOTE: The performance on April 26 is part of the Stage Door Series at The Weidner; this is a matinee performance and will require those auditioning to commit to touring the production to the Weidner with rehearsals on April 24 & 25

Rehearsals for SHE KILLS MONSTERS will start with a table reading sometime in December (TBD) with one-on-one rehearsals in January/February, with full cast rehearsals beginning in early March.

Actors will be asked to read one or two of the provided SKM scenes & monologues (link below) and may also present a prepared monologue from any play.

SKM Audition Monologue_Scene options by Character

Please note that there are multiple instances of intimacy, combat, and dance involved. Each character’s description will note whether that character engages in those activities. All characters are teen high schoolers. This is a queer-friendly play.

CHARACTERS

AGNES is a HS Senior mourning the death of her parents and younger sister. She is traditional and naive. She is average but trying to transcend that.

      • Intimacy – Agnes may share some modest moments of intimacy with boyfriend, Miles
      • Combat – Agnes engages in significant combat
      • Dance – Agnes engages in some dance

TILLY is mostly seen as her D&D avatar character, Tillius the Paladin, a total badass warrior, who is defiant and impatient. Tilly herself is an insecure nerdy teen, who is bullied for her sexuality.

      • Intimacy – Tillius shares a passionate kiss with Lilith
      • Combat – Tillius engages in significant combat

VERA is Agnes’ best friend, a snarky HS Senior who works at the Gap. Vera also appears as Vera the Beholder.

MILES is Agnes’ football jock boyfriend, emotionally awkward but sincere. Miles also appears as Miles the Doppelganger.

      • Intimacy – Miles may share some modest moments of intimacy with his girlfriend, Agnes
      • Combat – Miles engages in minimal combat

CHUCK is a HS First Year geekster, D&D Dungeon Master. He’s big for his age and worried that he’s fat.

LILITH is a D&D Demon Warrior, a perfect combination of beauty & brawn, the devil’s daughter. Violence makes her hot. In this world, she is Lily, who was Tilly’s best friend and has unresolved feelings about Tilly.

      • Intimacy – Lilith shares a passionate kiss with Tillius
      • Combat – Lilith engages in significant combat

KALIOPE is a lean, athletic dark elf lacking in emotional awareness. She’s in the mood for danger. In this world, she is Kelly, a shy girl who uses forearm crutches because she has cerebral palsy.

      • Combat – Kaliope engages in significant combat

ORCUS is an over-sized red demon, the former overlord of the underworld, who has tired of being attacked by so-called adventurers and now prefers to watch TV. In this world, he is Ronny, a normal, TV-obsessed teen.

      • Combat – Orcus engages in significant combat
      • Dance – Agnes engages in some dance

STEVE is an awkward, aspiring mage/warrior who repeatedly dies ignominiously in combat. In this world, Steve is an awkward teen.

      • Combat – Steve engages in some combat

NARRATOR/FARAH/EVIL GABBI/EVIL TINA are roles under consideration for doubling.

NARRATOR is channeling her best Cate Blanchett in actively and engagingly introducing us to key elements of our story. She powerfully commands our attention and then slips away.

FARAH is a beautiful, dancing, singing fairy who kicks ass.

              • Combat – Farah engages in significant combat

EVIL GABBI/EVIL TINA are mean, homophobic bully cheerleaders. In this world, Gabbi/Tina are much the same, but better at putting a pleasant face on that.

              • Combat – Evil Gabbi/Evil Tina engage in significant combat
              • Dance – Evil Gabbi/Evil Tina engage in some kick-ass dancing

Bugbears/Wraiths/Cavalcade of Monsters/Tiamat Puppeteers are non-speaking roles that will engage in some combat. There may be some doubling of these folks with the above 4 roles and/or as deck crew.
