Synopsis: Caroline, a vulnerable young woman, is haunted by her traumatic past. Having recently escaped her parent’s authoritarian grasp and religious values, she is finally starting to process her experiences. Marshal, the memory of Caroline’s manipulative ex-partner and abuser, stands in the way of her ability to gain closure. Abuse, addiction, and accountability come to a head as the two battle for control

Content Warning

Please be aware that this play discusses childhood sexual abuse, addiction, religious trauma, parental neglect, domestic violence, and grooming. This play contains strong language, kissing, physical aggression, and depictions of sexual violence. We plan to consult an intimacy coordinator for the project.

Character Descriptions:

  • Caroline Barnette: Female. 19. Mature and intelligent. Suffers from PTSD. She’s self-conscious and extremely careful about her outward appearance. She is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, grooming, domestic violence, and parental neglect. She struggles with the affection she previously held for her childhood abuser, Marshal, and subconsciously wonders if she is to blame for some of her trauma. She’s a former Catholic and she has a difficult relationship with her parents.
  • Marshal: 19. Manipulative and Calculated. He is a heady blend of polished suburban son, dangerous bad boy, and dark romantic. He has a difficult relationship with his parents and community, and a history of struggling with unhealthy coping mechanisms. One such mechanism manifested as a perverse need to control Caroline. As a memory, Marshal has access to the most troubling information in Caroline’s head and frequently uses her struggles against her.
