Students able to self-identify as First Gen through SIS

As of January 1st, UW-Green Bay students have the ability to self-identify their first-generation status beyond the initial university application process. A first-generation college student is a student with neither parents nor guardian having completed a four-year degree.

The self-service identifier will aid in providing a more accurate way to recognize first-gen students throughout their academic journey, allowing the institution to better understand and support this important identity group. By having the first-generation indicator in our systems, the university can tailor resources, create targeted programs, and foster a stronger sense of belonging. These initiatives will work to strengthen student persistence and retention.

Students will have the opportunity to verify their first-gen status on the Personal Information Review page through SIS twice a year along with their emergency contacts and other important information. Accurate data will enhance advocacy efforts, ensuring that first-gen voices are heard and unique experiences are recognized. Self-identifying as a first-gen student allows individuals to be part of a network that celebrates their achievements and provides opportunities for academic, professional, and personal growth.

We are incredibly grateful to the First Generation Student Success Collaborative for their ongoing leadership. Special thanks to Casey Manders and Jamel Heim from GBIT for their dedication and hard work in making this long-time strategic plan a reality.
