The Right to Read Documentary Showing | October 30 | 5-7:30 pm | Brown County Library, 515 Pine St

As part of UW-Green Bay’s Literacy Initiative efforts and in partnership with Achieve Brown County, we invite you to watch the documentary “The Right to Read” on Wednesday, October 30 from 5-7:30 pm at the Brown County Library, 515 Pine St, Green Bay, WI 54301. Following the viewing, there will be a panel discussion where you can join the conversation. UW-Green Bay’s Samantha Meister, associate professor of Literacy Education and Methods will be part of the panel to discuss how higher education is responding to the passage of Act 20 and how we are working to best prepare new teachers for the shifts in approaches to teaching reading that are currently underway. UW-Green Bay Education’s ongoing partnerships with local and surrounding school districts are helping to support teacher and students with the changes in curriculum and instructional approaches.

ABOUT THE FILM When a child can’t read, their chances of incarceration, homelessness, and unemployment increase. The Right to Read shares the stories of an activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.

IN BROWN COUNTY Over 60% of Brown County’s young people currently not reading proficiently. This is a community issue. We, as individuals and as a county, need to take action to support the future of our community and the success of our young people
