End-of-year classes moved to UWGB after fire at Green Bay’s Aldo Leopold school

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — A fire broke out early Tuesday at Aldo Leopold School in Green Bay.

Due to the fire, there is no school Tuesday. The Green Bay school district announced Tuesday afternoon that classes for the rest of the week would be held at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The school year ends on Friday.

“I don’t see any point in risking their health, at all, and if we’re still figuring out what happened, you know, there’s the risk of something else going wrong. So, yeah I think they’re making the right choice in that regard,” said Stephanie Burns, who has two children that attend Aldo Leopold School.

No one was hurt in the fire. Officials with Green Bay Metro Fire Department said there was no one inside the building at the time of the fire.

FOX 11 spoke with a Green Bay police sergeant. He says he was sitting in the school’s front lot doing paperwork and heard a boom around 3 a.m.

Once firefighters found the source of the fire, it was quickly extinguished.

Officials told FOX 11 around 3 p.m. that the Fire Marshal was still on scene.

“We’re actually working with the fire marshal who inspects this building,” Battalion Chief Mike Vanden Avond said earlier Tuesday morning. “He has a good layout of the school so he’ll work toward the room of origin and try to determine what caused it, what failure was there that may have caused the fire to start.”

“I hope they figure out what it is. It is a little bit worrisome, but I have faith in the fire department and the departments that will be involved in finding getting to the root cause of it,” said Jessica Diedrich, a parent with two students at Aldo Leopold School.

Aldo Leopold on Eliza Street is part of the Green Bay Area Public School District.

“Really grateful that the fire department was responsive,” Lori Blakeslee, the Director of Communication & Public Relations for the district, said. “Obviously their quick response, we hope, has kept this limited to a small area of the school.

School officials are working on how the rest of the week will go and will let parents know as soon as possible.

“It’s always disruptive for families to get an early morning phone call and find out school is cancelled,” Blakeslee added. “We are really appreciative of our families. We recognize this causes them to scramble today.”
