CSB High Impact Practices (HIPs) article features!

Congratulations to Kathryn MartenDianne Murphy, PhDHeather Kaminski, DBA, CMA, and Mathew Dornbush, who have been published in the latest issue of the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSOTL) for their research on High Impact Practices (HIPs). The most recent issue features their two articles, which introduce and support their innovative approach to HIPs:

Marten, K., Murphy, D. D., Kaminski, H. L., & Dornbush, M. (2025). High-Impact Practices (HIPs) Spectrum: Introducing the High-Engagement Experiences (HEEs) Taxonomy. Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, 25(1). https://doi.org/10.14434/josotl.v25i1.36024

This paper introduces the High-Engagement Experiences (HEEs) Taxonomy as part of the High-Impact Practices (HIPs) Spectrum. The HIPs Spectrum expands the definition of HIPs from a binary classification to a nuanced continuum, providing a quantitative scale for measuring and classifying courses. This taxonomy aims to enhance the assessment of educational practices and their impact on student success.

Kaminski, H., Marten, K., & Murphy, D. (2025). Measuring student success using the High-Impact Practices Spectrum: Evidence for the value of High Engagement Experiences . Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, 25(1). https://doi.org/10.14434/josotl.v25i1.36373

This study provides quantitative evidence supporting the HIPs Spectrum by analyzing seven years of enrollment data. The findings demonstrate that both HIP and HEE courses significantly increase student persistence and that HEEs significantly decrease time to graduation. The study highlights the importance of HEEs as a pedagogical tool to support student success.

Dr. Kaminski, Dr. Murphy, and Ms. Marten have worked together as an interdisciplinary SoTL research team for 5 years, collaborating as faculty and staff across different academic disciplines and now across different universities (University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in the UWGB Austin E. Cofrin School of Business and Marquette University). They will continue researching High Impact Practices, and are looking forward to presenting multiple aspects of their research during three presentations at the upcoming Assessment Institute at Indiana University Indianapolis in October 2025.
