UW Green Bay Internship Opportunities with Literacy Green Bay

Literacy Green Bay is seeking interested human development, elementary education, social work, or foreign language (Spanish) majors for internship opportunities beginning Fall Semester 2018! We have a potential 4 to 6 positions available in various programs within our organization. Successful candidates must be reliable, energetic and show strong initiative and a willingness to dive in when working with our children and families!

We seek caring individuals with a strong desire to work with children from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds who can work two mornings or two evenings a week in our Family Literacy programming. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain experienceworking with children ages 1 to 6, interact with families from other cultures, and learn more about a non-profit community based organization. For all programs, the parents of children being served are on site in adult education classes.

Responsibilities (based on interest, prior experience and knowledge) include:

* Plan activities that foster the language and literacy development of children ages 1 to6 years.

* Provide a stimulating environment and learning opportunities that enhance the children’s social/emotional growth and development.

* Assist Site Coordinator and Early Childhood teachers in observing and assessing children’s language, literacy and school-readiness skills upon program entry and prior to exit (training provided).

* Assist with documenting progress and benchmarks on each child to assure quality instruction and care.

* For school-age children, assist with homework completion (bilingual Spanish helpful) as well as silent or guided reading, using dialogical questioning to help reluctant readers.

* Promote self-esteem through encouragement and positive reinforcement.

* Help plan and facilitate Parent & Child Together (PACT) activities with Site Coordinator and Early Childhood teachers that families can do at home.

* Energetic, self-starter, flexible and adaptable

* Ability to interact effectively with varying numbers and ages of children

* Display a patient, nurturing and respectful attitude with all children

* Culturally competent

* Successful background check required

Internship Program Description/ Locations and Contact Information:

I. The Children First Family Literacy Program – located at Howe Community Resource Center

a. Program meets two mornings and two evenings per week. Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. or 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.

b. Parents attending are receiving GED test preparation, and their children range in age from 1 to 4 years (in the morning program) and 1 to 10 years (in the evening program).

c. Children too young for school receive early childhood and preschool-readiness instruction as well as social/emotional skill development to prepare them to enter Head Start/ 4-K or Kindergarten.

d. School-agers receive homework/reading/writing assistance to strengthen school success.

II. ELEvate Family Literacy Program – currently housed within two GBAPS school buildings: Doty and Keller Elementary

a. Keller Site meets two mornings per week, Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.

b. Doty Site meets two mornings per week, Tuesday and Thursday, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.

c. Parents attending at Keller (primarily Somali) and Doty (primarily Hispanic) are receiving English language (ELL) instruction, and their children range in age from infant to 4 years.

d. Children too young for school receive early childhood and preschool readiness instruction, as well as help with social/emotional skill development to prepare them to enter Head Start/4-K or Kindergarten.

III. Literacy Green Bay Family Literacy Program – located at Literacy Green Bay

a. Program meets (up to) four mornings and four evenings per week, Monday through Thursday, from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. or 5:45 to 8:15 p.m.

b. Parents attending are receiving English language instruction, and their children range in age from 1 to 6 years.

c. Children too young for school receive early childhood and preschool readiness instruction as well as help with social/emotional skill development to prepare them to enter Head Start/4-K or Kindergarten.

d. Additional project hours may be available for appropriate cadidates
