An evening of elegance, inspiration, and artistry awaits as UW-Green Bay’s Sigma Tau Delta invites the campus and community to the Celebration of Thought and Beauty. On Friday, Nov. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Phoenix Rooms, this event promises a night that blends the intellectual and the artistic experience.
The event includes readings, discussions, and performances highlighting literary works, art, and ideas meant to inspire and provoke thought. It is an event where people can sit back and enjoy the show in front of them. The celebration embodies the beauty of the Phoenix, capturing its fiery essence in a breathtaking display. It allows students to perform and rise to the occasion.
Sigma Tau Delta, an international English honor society and campus club, holds the event once every semester. It aims to showcase the power of literature, art, and critical thinking, encouraging students and community members to engage in creative expression and intellectual exploration. The evening was filled with the rhythms of performances, readings, and discussions.
The spirit of the Phoenix—a symbol of rebirth, resilience, and boundless creativity—embodies what this event means at UW-Green Bay. Just as the mythical bird rises anew, this event encouraged students to showcase their talents and find new perspectives within themselves and the world around them. This was an evening where everyone was invited to relax, be inspired, and celebrate the beauty of creativity. Whether passionate about the arts or simply curious, attendees are invited to enjoy an evening that promises to expand perspectives and ignite imaginations.
Discussions with Sigma Tau Delta Members
Engaging with high-ranking members of Sigma Tau Delta about the Celebration of Thought and Beauty at UW-Green Bay provides an opportunity to explore their vision and leadership regarding the event.
Design and Social Media Coordinator Kimberly Rouse said, “As an English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta is committed to uplifting writers, poets, performers, and artists who wish to share their craft. Celebration of Thought and Beauty gives these creators a space to share their art in front of a live audience and to celebrate their accomplishments.” Rouse also added, “While Sigma Tau Delta is an English Honor Society, we are also interested in the art of all forms. We offer a space during the event for artists of all different mediums (photography, collages, painting, knitting work, etc.) to share their work and open the stage for many different kinds of performances than just poetry and prose reading. In the past, we have had community members perform stand-up comedy, perform a part of a play, sing a song, do improv, and even had a demonstration from UWGB’s Taekwondo Club.”
In an age of increasing access to information and creative platforms, Sigma Tau Delta recognizes the importance of fostering critical thinking and academic growth through art. Rouse explained, “Creative expression, critical thinking, and academic growth all benefit from each other. Creative expression helps to develop critical thinking skills through practice (just like the famous saying, “think outside of the box,”) and critical thinking is vital to academic growth (after all, one cannot apply their learning without being able to look at it critically.) It works in reverse order as well. Academics can teach one critical thinking skills (e.g., Learning how to examine the setting of a story and how it impacts the plot,) and those critical thinking skills can help one with creative expression (working off the previous example: Building a setting in a story that directly impacts the plot.).”
For Rouse, the event’s title, Celebration of Thought and Beauty, carries profound meaning. Rouse said, “As the title suggests, it celebrates art in all forms. Sigma Tau Delta is dedicated to creating a space where creators can share their art and celebrate their achievements.”
The Celebration of Thought and Beauty at UW-Green Bay is a testament to the transformative potential of art, literature, and critical thinking. Through a rich array of performances, discussions, and exhibitions, the celebration honors the resilience, ingenuity, and enduring spirit of human creativity, an idea symbolized by the phoenix, which represents the essence of the event.
By embracing a wide range of artistic and intellectual expressions, the event highlights the universal nature of beauty and emphasizes the importance of creating inclusive platforms for all voices. As Kimberly Rouse points out, the event extends beyond its literary roots to welcome contributors from diverse backgrounds and art forms, fostering a culture of mutual respect, collaboration, and discovery. Whether through poetry recitation, a staged excerpt of a play, or a display of visual art, each contribution enhances the event and showcases the potential of creativity.
