Is UWGB’s Campus Boring or Peaceful? Students are Split.

UWGB has been known as a unique campus that is secluded, peaceful, and full of nature. It’s one of the rare campuses where students can see a rabbit, deer, and turkey on their way to class. Many students enjoy the campus because it’s quiet and relaxing. However, other students describe UWGB as a boring campus, saying it lacks tradition.

UWGB could be considered a peaceful campus. It is located outside the city of Green Bay, almost out in the wilderness. There are many trails UWGB members can walk and many outdoor spots where they can study and do schoolwork. A number of students transfer to UWGB or enroll here for those reasons. The university has a reputation for focusing more on academics and less on the party side of things.

“UW-Milwaukee had its fun times, but Green Bay is relaxing and more focused on school,” said Riley Studinski, who transferred from Milwaukee. Studinski described UWGB as “way better” for his academic and personal needs. His experience reflects that of some students who choose to move from larger, more energetic campuses to environments they feel are calmer and better suited to their goals.

While the school does have the benefits of being calm and collected, other students describe it as boring and bland. Many students have complained about the lack of events. Even when there are events being run, attendance can be low because students may not find them compelling. UWGB has been making efforts to attract students to attend these events; however, turnout does not always reflect the effort. This often depends on student preferences. Some students attend these events and report having a good time.

“Everyone has their own preference for what they think is fun,” said Kimmy, a student ambassador at the university. She said that some students have shared concerns about low participation at campus events and have even described the campus as “boring.”

One of the biggest topics among students is the traditional “college experience.” Some believe that they’re missing out on experiences that students at other universities are having.

Football is a common example. Statistically, it is the most-watched college sport. The appeal is not about the sport itself, but the traditions and events that occur before, during, and after the game like tailgating, partying, and post-game celebrations. Green Bay does not have a football team, and there is no tailgating culture surrounding other sports.

Things like that are what create traditions in other schools. Madison has the iconic “Jump Around” at the end of the third quarter of every football game, and Virginia Tech has “Enter Sandman” by Metallica play before football games.

Most students agree that UWGB is a strong academic institution. However, a significant number believe that adding traditional college experiences could make it a more vibrant campus. “Ever since going to a Wisconsin Badger football game, it’s always made me want this school to have a football team,” says Mathias Weber, a UWGB student.

Whether students think it’s boring or peaceful, it’s believed to be a unique campus in its own way. Many people say it depends on the student’s preference; many say the campus needs to get “up to date.” Whatever the preference is, it’s safe to say there is an ongoing debate on whether UWGB is boring or peaceful.
