Studying abroad is more than just an academic endeavor—it’s a transformative journey that shapes worldviews, expands comfort zones, and opens doors to new opportunities. At the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB), this journey is facilitated through the dedicated support of the university’s Office of International Education. Two UWGB students, Nick and Dale, shared their personal stories of embracing the challenges and rewards of studying abroad. Their journeys reflect the nuanced process of adapting to new academic and cultural landscapes. Additionally, we highlight the role of UWGB’s International Office in preparing students for their time abroad and in offering continuous support throughout their experiences.
Discovering Danish Culture and Personal Growth Abroad
When Nick decided to study in Aalborg, Denmark, he was drawn to the unknown, eager to experience a country he knew little about. His time abroad, spanning from January to July 2024, brought both academic and personal challenges that pushed him to grow. Adjusting to Denmark’s approach to assignments proved challenging; unlike the page counts he was used to, assignments in Denmark were formatted by character count, and he struggled initially to keep up. Personally, he faced loneliness in the first one to one-and-a-half months but gradually built a circle of international friends who provided support and companionship. Although language barriers were not an issue, Nick noted cultural differences in social interactions, observing that Danes were more reserved initially compared to Americans, who tend to engage openly with strangers. These cultural differences challenged his social adaptability, ultimately teaching him patience and persistence in building connections. Nick reflects on how studying abroad strengthened his independence, expanded his perspective in his field of history, and proved his resilience in unfamiliar settings. He encourages hesitant students to take the leap despite the challenges of leaving behind a support system, as the experience has made him more open, self-reliant, and resilient. Researching one’s destination and connecting with previous study-abroad participants, he advises, are key to making the most of the experience.

Embracing New Challenges in Germany
Dale’s choice to study in Kassel, Germany, was rooted in a personal connection—his parents had lived there, and his father speaks German. His experience in Kassel not only sharpened his academic skills but also deepened his understanding of his heritage. Academically, Dale adapted to a new workload style, which emphasized independent study over daily assignments. Socially, he faced the challenge of keeping up with family and friends in the U.S. due to the time difference and had to stay awake late to follow American sports. Fortunately, his proactive approach to preparing for these challenges made the transition smoother. With prior German study, Dale could handle most situations independently but was able to assist his roommates when language issues arose. A particularly impactful moment came during New Year’s Eve in Berlin, where he celebrated with locals, an experience distinct from his celebrations in the U.S. This cultural immersion expanded his worldview and deepened his appreciation for diverse social norms. Dale’s advice to future study-abroad students is simple: take the leap, avoid excuses, and embrace the opportunity for personal and cultural growth. His experience has heightened his self-sufficiency and broadened his perspective, leaving him more confident and open to new experiences.

Behind the Scenes: The Role of UWGB’s International Office
Beyond individual experiences lies the crucial support of UWGB’s Office of International Education, which guides students from the initial planning stages to their return home. The office ensures structured preparation through multiple pre-departure meetings, comprehensive orientation sessions, and mandatory health insurance arrangements. They also provide guidance on practical essentials like budgeting, health and safety, and cultural adaptation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the office was essential in managing emergency situations, ensuring the safe return of students from countries like Italy before borders closed, and supporting international students, like one from Haiti who was unable to return home due to legal and logistical challenges. UWGB’s counseling and health services are available to help students cope with homesickness and culture shock, encouraging them to seek help proactively. The office maintains partnerships with foreign institutions to facilitate smooth transitions. For example, UWGB’s Japan program offers tailored English-language classes, and the Hessen exchange program in Germany has thrived due to mutual visits and advisor familiarity. Through these partnerships and extensive resources, UWGB continues to provide students with the support needed to thrive abroad, fostering global perspectives that enrich the entire university community.
