Opened April 1, 2024, it set out to make a name for itself within the Green Bay community, and just under two years later, it has achieved its goal.

Started as a passion project from a pair of siblings looking to make a difference in a field that is often seen as cold and sterile, they wanted something different for their hospital, and it can be seen top to bottom.

Green Bay ER & Hospital is a practitioner-owned hospital; this means that the doctors you will see working the days have a direct stake in the hospital succeeding, so they do everything in their power to ensure that each patient’s experience is as positive as it can be.

Dr. Matthew Freeman was a doctor for several different hospitals all around the United States, and he was used to the struggles that come with being a doctor in a major hospital, largely because the patient experience is lacking.

“We were trained to ‘move the meat’ as I was trained to do, meaning we had to get patients in and out as quickly as possible,” Freeman says of his experience working in these massive hospitals. He says that despite the fact that he got really good at this process, it never really felt right to him.

He then saw an opportunity, in partnering with his sister, who is a doctor herself, to create something different. They wanted to focus on the patient experience above all, creating a welcoming place so that people don’t fear going to the doctors.

This didn’t come easy, though, as it was still a difficult opening, especially getting the community to embrace them. “I was literally going door to door handing out pamphlets for the hospital,” said Freeman, reflecting on the early months of the hospital being open.

Along with guerrilla marketing, they were also very active in the community, supporting many local events, helping sponsor local sports programs, and doing many other things. This didn’t go unnoticed by the community, and the hospital has earned a reputation for being a very welcoming and caring facility.

“Care doesn’t end when they leave the facility,” Freeman said. They tried to follow up as much as possible with patients to make sure that they can follow what they need to do, and hopefully not have to go back to the ER.

In 2025, they were awarded the Best of the Bay for all Green Bay hospitals, which is a reflection of all the work they put into building themselves up within the community.

As of now, they have almost 600 Google reviews and stand strong at a 4.9 out of 5-star rating, which is even more impressive when you consider that other hospitals can sometimes struggle to maintain a high rating.

An example of a review comes from Paul Schiessl, who wrote, “Care was prompt and thorough. Everyone I met was professional and courteous. It felt like they really cared about finding the true cause of my issue and weren’t just shuffling me through.”

His sentiments are echoed throughout other reviews, which shows how dedicated not only Dr. Freeman is, but also his entire staff. “We are all on the same team,” Freeman said when talking about how important his staff is to the success of the hospital.

In regard to some other aspects, the hospital does offer a lot of services, but they are still aware that, as a micro-hospital, they are somewhat limited; however, they have great relationships with all of the other hospitals in the Green Bay area.

Dr. Freeman mentioned that if a patient goes there and they are in need of something like a lifesaving operation, they can be easily transported to a place that can do it without having to wait through that hospital’s ER, so they can be seen quickly.

In regard to pricing, they are very transparent with costs on their website, and they are very competitive within the Green Bay market.

If you are looking for a place to find proper medical attention, low wait times, and a great patient experience, then Green Bay ER & Hospital might just be the place for you.
