I Have A Secret, Shh…

I honestly just go with the flow in college, not doing too much but also not doing too little. I did not join any clubs, which I wish I had joined at least one. Getting involved is something I should have done in the beginning of the semester. Now more than halfway through, joining clubs is harder than it was two months ago. Every club is already in action. I do not want to be the person who joins ate and expects to be involved in

everything. I recommend signing up for clubs, even if you are not fully convinced you want to be a part of it, you can always just leave it. Getting involved  helps you meet new people, which is something I recommend because the friends I made on day one are not my friends three months      into the semester.                                                                         Image Source:https://www.elcamino.edu/campus-life/organizations/     Tring to make friends here was something I struggled with at first. “I was not going to ask some stranger if they want to be friends, that is embarrassing” is what I thought. Everyone here is thinking the same thing, hoping someone introduces themselves to them. I should have been more outgoing, talked to people I thought looked cool, but I didn’t. Instead, I let people introduce themselves to me, and I am not friends with one of them now. Do not let anybody make you feel like you have to act differently. You need to be yourself. It is college, not high school, grow up and be you. The right people for you will find you, and they will replace your first week friends who weren’t very nice.

Dorm Life Stinks

Dorm life kind of stinks. The people in my building literally do not talk to anyone. They all already have their groups and will not even try to be kind to me or anyone else. They all sit in the lounge in the dorm and glare at me when I enter. It is not a good feeling to be excluded, let alone being treated like you did something bad when you did nothing at all. Moreover, you must live in these crappy small boxes that are either too warm or too cold. You can’t even open your windows when it gets too hot in your room because it is too cold outside. The sink is always plugged somehow, even after someone just came in to fix it. The only good thing about the dorm building is the lounge, but you can’t even go into it without feeling judged every second you’re in there. I only go there to make myself some decent food, but they all demand that I give them some food every time. It’s my food, not yours.

Living in the freshman dorms, you must have a meal plan, which stinks just like the food they serve in the dining hall. The food there is either the same food as every other day or something new which is honestly disgusting. I would much rather not have a meal plan at all and just go grocery shopping and cook everything. Then I would be able to spend money only on what I need and be able to cook food I like. It probably would be cheaper not having a meal plan anyway. I could do cook food that is edible for me and my friends. The few friends I made here so far are the best and nicest people I have ever met. They make living here with the stinky dorm like so much better.

College is Hard? Really?

College is nothing like what my high school teachers said it would be like. They said that I would never have any free time, I would have essays due every week, and that my classes would be much harder than what I was taking in high school. Most of my classes were AP classes in high school, and those classes had a teacher who said they were going easy on us compared to what our college

professors would be like. I was told that I would not survive college, that I was too laid back, and that my attitude towards school was going to be my own worst enemy. All this made me feel like I wasn’t good enough for college, that I wasn’t worthy. I will never understand why they felt the need to make their students, kids who look up to them, that they will fail, that they won’t be successful in their future. All that was a lie, college is fine, and my attitude towards school is working for me and my professors just fine.

All my professors are extremely nice and understanding. They are always willing to help me if I need help, and the only class that I must write “big” essays for is my writing class, and my teacher helped the class every step of the way when writing them. You must go

against and argue with her to make that class hard for you. The only thing that I am struggling with right now is catching up with my classes because I was out sick for a week, and even then, I have less to do than I would in a week of high school. The professors here are a lot more helpful in getting me caught up too than any of my high school teachers would have been. So honestly, college is so much better and easier than high school, nothing like those teachers said, and I’m so proud of myself that I am proving them wrong.
