My Hand Is Cramping

When college started, I wasn’t sure how effective my current time management tips would be. I figured that I would have to do some experimenting with new ways that might work for me in this environment. However, I have learned that having a roommate is not helping with my habits. She will talk to me as she sees me sitting on my laptop obviously doing homework. When I know that she is doing homework, I keep my mouth shut and try not to make a bunch of noise. However, I found that working with one friend specifically to do homework, helps both of us stay focused, otherwise I would need to be alone. We need to be in a room with just the two of us. After I realized some of the factors that were negatively affecting my time management, I decided to cut them off and figure out different ways that work for me.

Fortunately, after trial and error, I was able to figure out some secrets that help me study and stay focused. First of all, I need to either be in my dorm room alone or at the library. At my dorm, I keep a quiet show on in the background, but when I go to the library, it is silent. I haven’t noticed either one is better than the other.  I usually like to have background noise on in general. Sticky notes have been my best friend since starting college. Writing out everything I need to do helps me stay focused and organized. I cross it off once I do it and I take it off of my to-do list on canvas. I can also place them where I want to grab my attention.  I usually do homework for about an hour and then take a five-minute break. This helps me not get too worn out. Before I start studying or doing homework, I also make sure I have everything I need so I don’t get up and get distracted.

Cellmate

When I chose to live in dorms rather than staying at home, I didn’t know what to expect. When I was younger, I never had siblings to share a room with. Despite that, having a roommate is going okay. Living in a large building with multiple floors is new to me and I do not like many people in one place. People have been one of the main reasons I have been frustrated. There are not as many people trying to make friends as I thought.  I also do not enjoy how the lounge is always busy. Sometimes I want to go downstairs and do homework in the lounge, but I wouldn’t be able to focus. Another downside is that the water is disgusting. It is not clear and I can see stuff floating in it. However the heat is probably the worst thing. It is very warm in the dorms, even with two fans.

Although there have been some difficulties with transitioning to dorm life, there are many more pros than cons. Trying to meet new people is one of the things that I really enjoy about living in the dorms. Another would be having my own area. I like rearranging furniture and experimenting with the space. However there had been some difficulties with my past residential hall, but all has been well since I moved into R.E. Small.  My new roommate and I get along very well and we are good about figuring out who will do what.  We are like two ships passing in the night, which is really nice because we both get alone time. Although I really miss home, I enjoy living in the dorms. Being able to do whatever I want is also something I enjoy. I am able to make anything I want, and hang out with who I want when I want. In my opinion, being close to

classes are the best part about living in dorms. Not having to worry about my car every day is so nice. I will definitely be continuing to live in the dorms throughout future semesters.

Adulting

Trying to get used to living on my own has been a struggle for many reasons. I have never shared a room with anyone, so having a roommate has been interesting. We are different personality wise, but we haven’t had any serious issues. However, I am moving from my residential hall because I didn’t feel accepted in Cletus. I felt that I got weird looks, even from my RA, which made me really upset. However, yesterday I met my new roommate and I feel the building will be a better fit for me. Another struggle I have been dealing with is waking up for early classes, and getting to them on time. Growing up, my mom would always wake me up for school. Now that I am on my own, I feel as if my alarm doesn’t even go off half of the time. I either sleep through it, or I turn it off without realizing it.

Although there are some downsides to being on my own, there are many positives. Not having to worry about letting my parents know where I am has been very relaxing. I am able to go out whenever I want, with anyone I want. Just knowing that I am an adult away from my parents, takes all of the stress off of me. I know that they worry because they love me, but I need them to trust me to be on my own. Another aspect of college I really enjoy is the feeling of accomplishment I get after finishing an essay, or any piece of homework. To help with responsibility, I have been trying to set standards for myself. For example,  I can go out with my friends after I finish all my writing homework. Doing this not only helps me get my assignments done, but helps me have time I need for myself.
