Fists Through Screen

Online classes are a great way to earn college credit at your own pace wherever you want. While there are some great pros to doing online classes, like the flexibility you have, and the convenience of working whenever, I believe that the cons greatly outweigh the pros.

One thing about online classes that I dislike is the disconnect when I’m learning. I have discovered over the semester that I learn concepts much easier in person, compared to being behind the screen trying to make sense of new concepts. The professors also give out a lot of tedious busy work in online classes versus face-to-face classes. From discussion boards to an essay about how you’re feeling this week. I really dislike the filler work aspect of online classes and would much rather be tested on my knowledge than write essays. I have also had quite a few technical issues with different assignments being hard to access or turn in.

The biggest issue I have with online classes is how much easier it is to cheat in online classes versus having a professor watch you in face-to-face classes. I find it frustrating that kids in the same classes as me but taking them online can cheat on tests as much as they want, while in some classes I can’t even use my notes. Cheating is unfair to other students who are taking the class in person and getting worse grades because they cannot cheat, but also to the student cheating because you learn nothing from cheating. I think this is a big problem and needs to be changed because what you’re learning in college is important for when you have a job so it’s very important to truly learn topics and not cruise through them to get them done.

Living in a Shoebox

Living in a dorm was my biggest excitement about college life. From being able to decorate it, to living with someone I would grow really close with, I was very excited to start the college tradition of living in a dorm. There are many pros to living on campus, but also dorm-life has its cons. For starters you don’t get your own space to yourself very often. My roommate is a friend of mine from high school, and while we get along great, sometimes I just need a break and space to myself. Sharing such a small space is also something I find difficult about dorm life. This was a big change for me because I never had to share a room with my siblings and had a large bedroom to myself at home. Our room also gets full very fast with dirty laundry and stuff we accumulate over time here, which makes it feel like I am living in a shoebox.                                                                                                      While there are a lot of negatives about living in the dorms, I think the positives way outweigh them. One thing I love about the dorm life would be the fact that we have our own bathrooms! This is much nicer than having to carry all my stuff down to the communal showers and worrying about contracting foot fungus. Another pro about life in the dorms would be the cost here vs an off-campus apartment. I get to save money and be much closer to my classes. Living off campus would also mean having to pay for doing laundry and utilities, while on campus you automatically pay that with housing fees. Another thing I am really enjoying is how much closer my roommate and I have gotten over the past two months. We have known each other since kindergarten and are closer than we’ve ever been.

Squishing the Bug

There is no doubt that college life is much different than the lives we had before. With responsibilities such as keeping your room clean, college is much different than high school. In college you are expected to “be your own boss.” For me being my own boss is making sure that everything that needs to be done is done, like laundry, cleaning, and homework, but also scheduling when to get my work done and working ahead. Being your own boss means squishing the bug of procrastination and laziness. In college you don’t have your parent or teacher nagging you to get your work done or to wake up in the morning. You and you alone have the freedom to decide when or what to get done. It is easy to fall behind in college if you don’t keep track of work, don’t study, or choose not to show up to class.

I find that being my own boss has many more pros than cons. Some of the pro’s would be the fact that I have freedom. I can decide to stay up, but I can also decide when I need to say no to people and spend time working on homework or studying. Another pro would be I don’t need to depend on anyone else, so when things don’t go as well as they should have, I take the blame and learn how to fix my own problems. I cannot blame anyone else but myself for my mistakes. A con of being on your own boss is nothing will get done unless you do it. You don’t have your mom doing laundry and cleaning “behind the scenes,” it is all on you. A major key to success here is learning how to balance academics and life in a way it is manageable.
