Advantages to Disadvantages

In high school, you work your way up to become a senior and most people hold that title high. As soon as people graduate high school, reality hits. All summer I was so nervous for college, but as soon as I got here, all my worries faded away. The start of college is a new chapter in your life, like a breath of fresh air. My advice for incoming freshmen is to take a deep breath and let their new life begin. There are so many opportunities to find yourself, especially being a freshman. The clubs and classes you can take are all up to you and they can lead you to find a group of friends. It’s understandable to be nervous to meet new people and put yourself out there, but everyone else is scared to talk to new faces too.

There are so many positives to college but there are some obstacles that freshmans can encounter. To be a successful college student, you need to go to class, keep your dorm neat, stay up to date with your laundry, and juggle your school and social life. Balancing all these things can be overwhelming, especially if you come from a family that picks up after you. Also, it can be challenging being away from home. Being a freshman in college usually means the first time away from your family. Being homesick is very common. Face timing or calling family is a great way to connect with them. If you were to take anything away from this blog, time management and balance between school and social life are the biggest key points to success in college.

Chocolate and Vanilla

Dorm life comes with freedom and a whole new concept of living, but it comes with pros and cons. A con of living in a dorm is sharing space with a stranger. Living with someone you just met can cause stress, from sharing the sink in the morning before class to trying to go to bed while the other is studying at night. I go to bed at 9:00 and she goes to bed at midnight. Although my roommate and I get along well, we do not share the same interests. I keep my side of my dorm tidy while my roommate keeps hers a little messy. The other con with living in a residential hall is the random noises in the halls or other dorms close to me, especially at night. The walls are very thin and I can hear my neighbors’ television at night. People randomly yell in their dorms and they don’t think about other people.

Dorm life has definitely been hard for certain reasons but it is stimulating to live away from home. College dorm life comes with a lot of pros. For instance, I get to meet so many new people. Even though I have only been living on campus for a month an a half, I have gotten to know so many kind souls. Having the opportunity to live on campus has brought friendships that I will carry with me after college. Another pro living in a dorm is how conveniently close my classes are. If I drove to class or even if I lived in an apartment close to college, I would waste my energy and gas to get to class. When I wake up in the morning, I have to get ready for class, leave my dorm, walk ten minutes tops to my class, and I am there. Living on campus in the dorms is a new kind of life for me. It comes with pros and cons but it is thrilling to have a new experience.

Fresh Start

College comes with freedom and it’s nice being my own boss, but it comes with some pros and cons. Some cons would be not being able to take advantage of living at home. At home, my laundry and dishes get done when I slack off and I don’t have to worry about what I am going to eat for supper. Life at college is all about independence and freedom. Now that I am away from home, I do my own laundry and get food for myself. The responsibilities I had in high school were nothing compared to what I do in college. Also, I worry about my bills and how I am going to pay for college. I come from a family that doesn’t have money to help me with college. Being my own boss can feel like a challenge because I have new responsibilities but I have freedom I’ve always longed for.

Being my own boss and having freedom comes with many pros. For example, I learn who I am and I am becoming my own person. In college, I found myself and I am starting the life I was destined to have. I found friends that I share the same interests with and I will keep them in my life after college. Another pro would be time management. I get to decide when I take my classes, I don’t have to worry about what my family is doing in the evening, and I can do what I want. Having my own schedule is a big change from high school. Having free time to go hang out with friends or go home when I want to. Deciding the times of my own classes makes me more independent and shows that I am responsible. Being my own boss in college can be challenging at times but very rewarding to have a fresh start in life.
