  1. From our D2L discussion regarding the use of SPSS. I had never had to use this program prior to class. I learned how to input the data from the assignments and how to use its functions to analyze the data to form the descriptives and output. The descriptives and outputs are very organized tables of information. I really enjoyed the SPSS assignments and like them almost more than our excel assignments. I like the format of the SPSS program and not having to use formulas in the same way as we had within excel. I only disliked theses assignments when I ran into issues or became confused by the content such as with SPSS3 and chapter 10.

The issues and problems that I faced were most often related to connectivity issues. I have very poor home internet connection and with having to remote log in to the campus program it causes a delay within the programs and often lost connection or froze. I was able to overcome this by scheduling time at my job to work and/or complete our assignments via SPSS, as there was a much better connection. I also had a difficult time with the content in chapter 10, figuring out the calculations for using and computing the 5 boxes, and also figuring out which to reject or fail to reject. I tried to overcome the difficulty with SPSS3 and chapter 10 by re-reviewing the readings and resources available to assist.

SPSS could be applied and used in quite a few different reports that I use at work comparing data, for example something along the lines as to comparing our patient satisfaction scores. I could do something very similar to our SPSS4 ANOVA assignment to look at ratings amongst providers.

  2. As I posted on D2L, while researching and writing the Ethics Report, I found myself being exposed to rules of statistics that I was unaware existed. I suppose I did not realize that statistics as a profession was based on honesty almost more so than the research itself. That factor makes the research credible. It was interesting to learn how tedious following ethical guidelines truly is. I learned, through writing this paper, that there is so much more to being a statistician than I was relatively aware of. It is not simply mathematics; there is an abundance of research and studies that are also apart of being a professional in this field.

During this assignment, the biggest problem I faced was finding sources that pertained to statistics. There were pages and pages of articles that related to ethics in a wide variety of different subjects. I solved this problem by using a more refined search. For example, I used the author of one of the required articles as a search tool. I looked for additional articles that he had written that pertained to ethics in statistics. This ended up being very beneficial in helping me find proper sources.

  3. Before this course, I never knew or heard of statistics. I found it infatuating how statisticians find outcomes or probable outcomes for certain situations. They can also use this knowledge save lives and create a more safe environment by finding if certain situations are more harmful than helpful. Unfortunately, I was bothered to know that unethical practices are also used to further a statistician’s wealth. A corrupt statistician will accept bribes from some people such as political figures or pharmaceutical companies to give false, skewed or incorrect stats for personal gain. Ethical practices must be maintained or a statistician will lose all integrity an/or credibility. Unfortunately, even a small miscalculation can damage a statistician’s credibility. This is why it is important to check and double check your work. This is a great lesson on the ethics of statistics. One I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

  4. Like I stated for our d2l discussion, I was not sure I understood the concepts that were going to be presented comparing Business Stats with ethics. I never would have thought ethics would play such a major role. I am extremely glad this assignment was given to me because I had no idea ethics and stats were so connected. There are no business statistics that do not directly involve ethics. Without doing this assignment I would have continued to think in my head that business statistics was just about keeping companies data but it is so much more and the companies have so much pressure to make sure whoever is keeping the statistics has to do it all right. This assignment was a little easier than I thought it would be because I did not realize there would be so many articles relating to ethic problems in statistics.

  5. The Ethics Assignment opened my eyes to an entire issue I never thought about before. In the past I never realized that the power statisticians wielded, and the great responsibility that they have. I never thought about statisticians being pressured from outside sources to fudge data and results. Previously, I thought that only the bad people fudged the data. Understanding that statisticians must keep their integrity and always public the truth no mater the circumstances gives me a great respect for them. In this assignment I faced the difficulty of finding the right peer reviewed articles. However, I fixed that issue by just looking in greater depth. I also faced the challenges of interpreting some of the language used in the article, but that was easily remedied with a few looks in the dictionary. This knowledge can be applied to my studies to drive home the facts of what is right and what is wrong. It has made me think deeply about always making sure to report all my findings and sharing my data for whatever it is I may be presenting on. This is not limited to just statistics, but also case studies and quarterly reports. Ethics in statistics are a very important issue that all statisticians must take seriously, and everyone should follow the same guidelines regardless of profession.

  6. Significance of Ethics & Statistics:
I was very enlightened by the relevant significance of the role that ethics plays when performing statistical analysis and reporting. I must admit, I had no idea how intermingled the two factors are. It is so much more than just computing numbers and submitting the results. A person really has to be in touch with themselves and reality. Accuracy is of utmost importance as well as the integrity and behavior of the individual. You really have to understand the material/data that you are working with and look at all the probabilities involved. Making assumptions is not good enough. A person needs to be able to explain their conclusions and assure that all supporting evidence is disclosed. Critical thinking skills are not only meaningful, but required to produce quality outcomes.

My paper addressed the ethics and statistical correlation in general and also from a scientific principle method. Although the same expectations and ethical behavior applies, I found it difficult to combine all the information because of the critical and significant influence the results can have on human beings. I overcame this problem by separating the general aspect and the clinical research separately in my paper. I felt that each were worthy of explaining in detail, the devastating impact that dishonesty and inappropriate moral values can have, whether it be a new product you are trying to introduce or a medicine to aid in the health of an individual.

In my current position, I work with statistical data and have earned a great appreciation for how important it is to thoroughly understand the data and be meticulous when reporting the conclusions. I know that the knowledge I have gained in researching these topics will be ingrained in me for the rest of my life. I am grateful to have learned the importance of how ethics and statistics are related and valued.

  7. I learned a lot about ethics and statistics. Before this assignment, I never really thought about the two together. Now after having this assignment I learned that everyone doesn’t always follow their ethical morals when they are doing things with stats. Some people may lie just to make money off of people even if their product is faulty. A problem I faced while doing this assignment was that making sure the articles were peer reviewed and still involve stats and ethics. I had found a really good article but it wasn’t peer reviewed. I had to make sure that the article was peer reviewed before I read all the way through it. The knowledge I gained from this assignment was to really look into a new product before I buy it. I want to somewhat know that the product I’m buying isn’t going to cause me permanent damage in the future or something like that. I also learned that people may not always have the same ethical morals as you do. They may think something is right when you think that it is wrong. This information can really be applied to anything in the future whether it’s interest or in my major.

  8. Ethics was never something I took the time to think deeply about, after my Intro to Ethics class, it made me aware of ethics and what it was, but I still didn’t think too deeply about ethics and morality. This class, made me really figure out deeply what ethics means to me and what it means to various studies and ideas, such as statistics. Finding and reading the articles and having to summarize and reflect them definitely helped in understanding ethics in statistics.

  9. The ethics paper was very useful and taught me how important ethics is in statics because data needs to be true and reliable. In order for statistical data to be ethical, the statistician must be open, honest, and have integrity with their data and analysis. If someone is not willing to share their results it can lead people to think they are hiding something and then not trust their data and statistical analysis. In order for statistics to be ethical statisticians also must be honest and have integrity with their results. Statistical results can affect many people, so its important that it is accurate and not changed by the statistician. It is also important statisticians have integrity throughout their whole career to be successful and keep their research and teaching ethical. Ethics is clearly not only important in statistics, but in any profession and in life in general.

  10. Ethics is an important aspect of human life. It can easily be overlooked in favor of an easier path. Ethics was not one of the first things that came to my mind when I began to take statistics, but the research into the ethics paper really opened me up to the impact and importance of ethics within the field of statistics. I am glad to have written and studied ethics in class because it served as a reminder to myself of the importance of striving to be an ethical person and the much greater effect unethical behavior has on the world around us. Whether it is data variables or research notes unethical behavior can disrupt your environment and stain your reputation immensely.

  11. This was by far my favorite assignment of the semester! It was the most useful to me, knowledge wise, and I can take the ideas I learned and apply them in my future. I am a first time statistics student, so I have learned a lot over this semester, with almost everything in this class being new. While reading the articles about ethics in statistics and writing my ethics paper, I came across many new ideas that I was unaware of. I have learned how to perform statistical work responsibly and have gained respect for the use of statistics in various situations. I have discovered the true meaning of ethics and have a better understanding of how much work gets put into statistical research and experiments. Also, I learned that every little detail is important because with one tiny mess up your whole experiment can be off. This assignment reassured me of the importance of being moral and taking pride in the hard work I accomplished. The knowledge gained from this work on my ethics paper can be applied to my business administration major because it provided me with a better understanding of the word “ethics”, that will carry on into my career. Ethics deals a lot with challenging yourself, contributing fairly, and never taking advantage of others. Understanding those factors will help me out in my future business career when working with others. Honesty, integrity, and morality are all traits/characteristics having to do with ethics and those traits I hope to apply at my future job and in my life.

  12. The ethics paper showed me there is a lot that goes into researching statistics and making the process ethical. The articles were very informative and gave some good advice about being ethical. I learned that sharing research data with others, who request it, is the ethical thing to do. The accuracy of the statistics is required to have ethical statistics and it is important to notice any errors and report them. During the assignment it was difficult to find to other articles to go along with the ones that were provided. I used the ebscohost complete site the library provides on the school website. It helped me find two more articles that were peer reviewed and gave me enough information to work with. The length was another problem, but with each article and my reflection on them it was not a problem in the end. In the future knowing to be ethical applies to everything in life, from work to personal life. It helps you do the right thing and always make sure your work is correctly done. Knowing about business ethics can help me in future business classes and ultimately when I begin my career in the business world.

  13. I never considered ethics to be an issue in statistics, but working on this paper really opened my eyes to the conflicts that statisticians have. I’m very glad I had the chance to work on this assignment. At first I thought it was so clear cut that all people who use statistics would be following a set of guiding principles that would lead them in the right direction. I learned so much from doing this paper that I’ve shared with a lot of my friends and family the issues with ethics that a research will be faced with. Not one of those people had considered the possible conflicts that arise. I was really surprised to learn that there was more than one was to analyze data, it was even more shocking to learn that medical journals were printed that had incorrect information in them. The information is not verified before it is printed, and the researcher may have errors in his calculations. There are a lot of other issues that I never considered with ethics; this paper really expanded my thoughts of the subject of ethical behavior in the workplace, not only with statisticians.

  14. Although I was not thrilled to find out that we were going to have a 9 page paper due at the end of the semester I do think that I learned a lot from it. I found the articles that were assigned to us by Professor Bansel were a little difficult to read, but that just required me to read it over a few times. After being able to understand them I found them to be interesting and I found myself learning new things about ethics. I think by having us pick two more articles it helped me get an even better understanding of ethics. The two articles I chose to pick were both related to the medical field which I found easier to read and actually found myself reading more articles about it just for fun!

  15. After going through the ethic issue on business statistic, I learned that data collecting work is very precious! We should be respect to the one who are working on data analysis and collect. And also, we should be ethic to their achievement. During this semester’s studying, I found that it is not easy for the data work, you need collect data, use different method to get result, if there is anything wrong during your work, it will affect the final result. So, careful is indeed. Thus, we really should regard the statistic ethics is a serious problem.

  16. Through the process of researching and writing a paper on the topic of the ethics of statistical findings and data analysis, I learned the different aspects of ethics and how they can be applied to statistics. Before this assignment, I did not consider the complexity of this topic and how many different aspects actually fall into this category. For example, before researching this topic, I did not consider the fact that the term “ethics” means very different things to different people. Therefore, it is important for a statistician writing about their knowledge of ethics in statistics to clarify their definition of statistics in their writings. In the future, I will be able to apply this research to my academic discipline or area of interest due to the exposure to the process of searching for academic journals and peer-reviewed writings to write a strong, academically-based paper. This will definitely help me in my future studies to continue to write based on credible sources.

  17. The inclusion of ethics and statistics in this class was extremely important. There are countless decisions made with data and it must be statistically sound. There is no room for error. This is especially true with medications and treatments. I found this unit quite interesting in my field of nursing. If statistics are inaccurate, at any point in a research study, the study is compromised. The statistician, and all involved in the study must make the right decision. It does not matter if the mistake occurs in the planning stage or evaluation stage. It is also ethically sound to share data, this is how knowledge is shared and progress is made.

  18. After going through several medical journals associated with ethics and statistics I discovered there was a lot of things that were done in very unethical ways. This was also a learning experience because I never thought of statistics having any kind of ethical component to them. This was very evident when it seemed like every aspect of statistics could be exploited whether intentionally or unintentionally in the medical field in unethical ways. Again it amazes me that there was this much unethical procedures in the ethical field that I was able to find huge studies and research articles on the subject all involving stats.

  19. Dr. Bansal’s assignment on ethics taught me as a student how valuable this principle is in regards to the morality of one’s own work. Ethics, in theory, is much like a code of chivalry. It outlines the basic behaviors of individuals that will keep them from becoming astray from essentially “good guy” behavior. If said scholar falls off this well laiden path of chivalry, he/ she will be faced with a likelihood that can disprove their academic findings along with the possibility of losing all credibility for all works in the future. Things like taking credit for someone else’s work, altering findings to favor themselves or a funding party, or simply limiting any future developments on their work by other parties by withholding data/ evidence.

  20. For the ethics paper I first off was really confused on what the point was on why we had to do it the paper. I then read the articles we were assigned and found to other ones that seemed to be interesting to me and I learned a lot from them. For example, I learned what actions you should take if I were to reach a ethnic problem. In another article assigned we were given advice for young statisticians that came in handy because it described what it takes to become one and how one should act to be successful. In an article I found, it talked about how important it is to take down the information in a hospital setting which made me realize that statistics isn’t only important to statisticians, but also important to patients who receive the data that’s taken down in a hospital setting. Lastly, the other article I found I learned that editors and reviewers have a huge job in statistical analysis. Overall, I learned the understanding of ethical issues involved in analysis. The I knowledge gained from this paper can be applied to my major by now understanding that there are many ethical issues around that not only deal with the field of statistics but for example in hospital settings. Overall, statistics can be applied in other fields which is important to my major and this paper gave me a great understanding of that. I learned that you must tell the truth and take down data very serious. If you don’t, it won’t only cost yourself problems, but a lot of other people problems as well.

  21. Like I posted within the ethics discussion on D2L, this was an assignment that I really feel went well. It taught me the important issues on ethics related to not only business and statistics, but to any real life situation. Doing what is RIGHT is a goal I plan to keep in mind no matter what I’m doing. Honesty and Professionalism both will remain two of my traits throughout my future career as a marketer, and I know that if I fail to be ethically right (with statistical data or anything else) that there are consequences and I could even suffer from a negative reputation if it came to that.
