Danny was one of the six UWGB undergraduate students who presented their research projects to Wisconsin legislators and interested public as part of tenth Posters in the Rotunda event. Danny’s research on the German media coverage of US presidential election drew on content analysis of hundreds of articles appearing in 6 leading German newspapers during 2012 presidential campaign. As a winner of the blogging contest “Engage: The Water-Energy Nexus” held by UAE’s Masdar organization, Political Science professor Blaney was invited to participate in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January 2013. Selection committee noted that prof. Blaney’s “post demonstrated a thoughtful, well-researched response to the prompt, and stood out among the more than 70 submissions we received.” As a part of the recongnition, the organizers took care of all travel and accommodations expenses. Congratulations from all of us!

As mentioned previously, the public forum on Wisconsin elections was held October 15, 2012 and was co-sponsored by UW-Green Bay’s Political Science department, College Democrats, and College Republicans.

The panel featured Professor Emeritus Michael Kraft, Assistant Professor David Helpap, Wisconsin Senator Dave Hansen, and Jay Heck of Common Cause in Wisconsin.

Public forum on WI elections is scheduled for Monday, October 15. It will address critical issues of campaign finance reform, redistricting, public financing of state elections and voter id laws as they apply (and unfold) in our own state of Wisconsin. Our elected representatives (Sen. Hansen and Rep. Steineke) as well as our very own professors Mike Kraft and Dave Helpap will be part of the panel. These are all issues that received a lot of coverage in local and national press, have profound implications for US democracy and apply to college students in particular. The Forum is free and open to the university and greater Green Bay community.

From UW-GB LOG Newsletter:” Oxford University Press has just released the latest book by Michael E. Kraft, professor emeritus of Political Science and Public and Environmental Affairs. The 792-page hardcover text is The Oxford Handbook of U.S. Environmental Policy. It is co-edited by Sheldon Kamieniecki, dean of the division of social sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Current and former UW-Green Bay faculty members contributed material, with Dean Scott Furlong collaborating with former PEA colleague Sara Rinfret on one chapter, and former Prof. Denise Scheberle contributing another. Kraft says the book is intended, in part, to alert those entering the field to the most important topics that have been addressed, the most significant scholarship that has been produced, and the priorities for future research in a field has grown substantially from its beginnings in the late 1960s. With the expansion of government policies in the 1960s and 1970s and increasing interest in contemporary environmental challenges, political scientists and policy scholars have greatly expanded the scope and sophistication of research, but there was until now no single volume, encyclopedia, or edited collection that authoritatively brings together this information. Congratulations to our colleague, professor emeritus Mike Kraft, on receiving American Political Science Association’s Lynton Keith Caldwell Prize for best scholarly book in environmental politics published in the last three years. The Global Politics and Society class led by Prof. Katia Levintova, Political Science and Public and Environmental Affairs, raised $200 last Friday during the semi-annual Global Summit on Sustainability. This time donations will benefit a non-profit organization, Village Life, dedicated to communal projects in Tanzania including village wells, medical centers and schools. Prof. Adam Parrillo of Urban and Regional Studies, who works closely with Village Life, will present a check to the organization on behalf of UW-Green Bay students.

In the Spring 2012 semester, Department of Political Science, together with Humanistic Studies and Global Studies programs, organized a series of campus discussions about elections around the world. Our informal lectures and Q&A sessions discussed elections in Egypt, Russia, France, and transition of power in China, all taking place this year. Last event in this series is scheduled for Friday, May 4, 12-1:30pm. We hope you will join us for the last fascinating discussion of presidential elections in France and the situation in the European Union.

Our wonderful colleague and award-winning professor emerita, Denise Scheberle, was just awarded one of the top teaching honors in Political Science. Professor Scheberle is 2012 winner of American Political Science Association’s Teaching Award. We always knew that Denise was a super teacher, but this distinction signifies national recognition of this fact. Congratulations, Denise!
