The first Steps to Make a Difference Walk took place on October 18th, 2003.  The walk started off as the product of Professor Denise Scheberle’s Nonprofit Management course.  The event took place a week before National Make a Difference Day and was successful far beyond what the students had anticipated.  The students raised $4,000 that went to benefit  N.E.W. Community Clinic, New Community Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, and the ALS Therapy Development Foundation (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  This was made possible in part due to Schreiber Foods who matched 50 cents for every dollar that was donated up to $1,000.  Other notable entities were the walk’s sponsors:  Office of Student Life, the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity, and University Dining Services.
