  1. We have moved into dorms before and this was by far the easiest. Thank you for the tons of help!! However, we do also wish a Saturday or Sunday had been chosen as the move in date. While we would do anything to share the excitement with our daughter, it was a hassle to get off. But again – everything else was great!!

  2. Parked in the circle drive. Todd thanks for your attention to this but it really wasn’t a huge deal. Sounds like LOTS of others got help and we just happened to be off on timing. Everything else was fantastic. Not an unfriendly face in the crowed, any directions we asked for were met with kindness and smiles. I also thought that having the move in on a weekday was actually better for the reasons you mention. We were able to speak to people in some of the various offices we needed information from, and having the dining hall open and fully functioning was another bonus.

  3. Virginia – Again, sorry that you didn’t receive any help. Thanks for the time and location information. By chance, did you park behind the building in the grass? Would like to have this problem solved for next year’s Move-in Day. Thanks!

  4. We arrived at 10:30 to Josephine hall. Directions to get to the hall was good, but had no help in unloading either of our vehicles. On a positive note, the campus is so beautiful and I am very thankful for all of the planned events taking place over the first few days.

  5. Still don’t understand why move-in day has to be on a work day. My husband now has to miss it, which is really disappointing. He and our son are very close. I’d appreciate being able to understand how a weekday is chosen for move-in day, if not for my sake, but for future parents.

  6. My son will be moving in on my Teacher In-service day this fall. I can get the time off (and will) but will be missing some very important team-time with my colleagues. I wish it was on the weekend. That said, I’m excited :)

  7. Again, the same Monday issue already mentioned. I’ve been trying to recall the other campus move-ins a couple of years ago at UW Madison and Stout, but these are complicated by being right in a downtown street area. I was prepared to be swarmed by student helpers, which didn’t happen. Better direction as far as parking during unloading could also have been done. Arriving vehicles in the Schaefer area were pretty much left on their own to figure out where to put their vehicles which lead to some poor use of space available. Overall, though it was good, and you couldn’t have arranged for better weather!

  8. I agree with the Monday being hard to get time off, but overall the experience was a good one. At first I couldn’t figure out the hour and a half frame of time because when I checked into college we had like three days to check; however after getting there and seeing all the help and how organized it was I realized how it was a good thing to have everyone there at one time. Great job with the organization and support. I definately felt like my stepson would be taken care of when we left.

  9. I continue to be impressed with UW-GB. Moving my son in was a great experience. We had to ask for directions to his apartment and got pointed in the right direction right away. No sooner were we out of the car and a bunch of student showed up to help out. Both vehicles were unloaded in minutes. It was great! Thanks for making the start to my son’s transition a very positive one.

  10. Living 3.5 hrs. away, we stayed overnight at a nearby hotel. Being excited made for a fitful night’s sleep. My freshman daughter was anxious and we were first time college parents, just plane nervous.
We were overwhelmed with freindly helpers. Everything was well organized and easy to understand. Helpers were by the car before we had the trunk open! Their help was very much appreciated! Their smiles just added to the beautiful day.
WONDERFUL JOB!!! Thanks for all your help.

  11. Move-in-day went very smoothly well organized .Thank You to all staff members and students for your great directions and muscle power. Move in day was a great experience because of you. Thank You again

  13. I also thought having Monday as a move in day was questionable. Forunatelty I had that day off. I did observe alot of ADULTS in “green shirts” helping all of us.
During lunch the thought occurred to me that all of these adults perhaps would not be available on a week-end; and if they were it possibly might be at great expense.
Green Bay had alot of these helpful people, more so then when my daughters moved into another UW campus. My son and I were able to accomplish alot because staff was available!

  14. Move in went very quick with lots of help. I think the kids should know ahead of time that lofting both beds does not allow a futon to fit under the lofted beds as it does in many other college dorm rooms. Maybe on a web page where you sign as to how you want your rooms set up. There were many disappointed kids! We had to “move” it out after lugging it up to the third floor.

  15. It went so fast! Tons of help with unloading our pickup! wow! The weather could not have been more perfect. Taking time off from work on to move our first-born daughter was our priority, not a problem. It is a milestone and we would have been there no matter what day or time.

  16. I would also like to Thank April’s Teacher who ever you were that made her special day on 9/1/09 of turning 18 and being away at school so special, by getting her a cake
    Thank You :)

  17. Move in day was way better then I expected, everyone was so helpful
Now to survive the empty nest syndrome – LOL
    Sure I will survivie

  18. What a wonderful experience. The weather helped us all out as well (I can only imagine how a rainy move in would have been!)

Everything was so well organized and having help to unload was amazing! I can’t say enough about how easy this move in was! I remember my move in days and it was much more chaotic! While I understand the comments about being on a weekday, I think it was nice to have that one last full weekend with our daughter and to have the move in day be special. Both her dad and I took off of work (not an easy task) to be there and it made it all about her.

Organized, helpful and cheerful are words that come to mind. Thank you everyone for your great directions, for keeping things moving and for all the help bringing items into the room! We look forward to a wonderful college experience for our daughter.

  19. I do agree with you I too had to use vacation time, this is my first time taking my daughter to college, and it is true that a weekend would have been better, maybe have half the students move in a Saturday and the rest on Monday, for those parents who can not afford to take the time off.

  20. My son is a freshman and of course I wanted to be there to help him move in. However, I am also a teacher and school starts in the state of Wisconsin on Sept. 1. That means the day before is consumed with mandatory meetings. It would have been very helpful if freshman move in day could have been on Sunday so all the freshmen parents didn’t have to take a day off of work. I know other UW schools do that. As it was, I was able to use half a personal day, but my son got there late and missed the welcome orientation, etc. One of our friends, also a teacher and freshman parent, called to see if her son could move in a day early because of mandatory meetings at her school. She was told that the date was set well in advance and she should have been able to arrange something. Unfortunately, school start dates aren’t up to us. Up to this point, I felt communication was great and everything was done to make things very convenient. Just a thought for next year.
