November has arrived, and with it comes decidedly cooler temperatures, midterm exams, and the Thanksgiving holiday. One of November’s slightly less well-known roles is that of National Novel Writing Month.

National Novel Writing Month (sometimes known as NaNoWriMo) is a project through which people all over the world attempt to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November. Sound impossible? Not according to the NaNoWriMo website, which states that of the approximately 120,000 people who attempted the feat in 2008, over 20,000 of them completed their novel by midnight on the last day of November.

Though it seems that January or July might be more appropriate and convenient months for college students to attempt this feat, if you’re one of the brave attempting to meet the challenge, the library has some resources to give you a hand with your writing:

Wisconsin NaNoWriMo Participants – Green Bay falls into the “elsewhere” category on the NaNoWriMo regional forums, so if you’re looking for some local writing buddies, check here.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Creative Writing – Not that the title reflects our opinion of any of you attempting NaNoWriMo, but there may be some good tips here.

Materials on Heroes in Literature – Who is your main character, really?

Materials on fiction writing.

Writing prompts from Writer’s Digest – Hit a wall with your plot? Have your main character wax poetic on one of these prompts.

Or try the Plot Twist Generator or Character Description Generator to find ways to shake up your novel. Careful – not all plot twists are rated PG.

If you’re really desperate to up your word count, maybe a thesaurus can help.

The World of Caffeine : The Science and Culture of the World’s Most Popular Drug – Given the coffee you may turn to in order to stay awake and reach your daily word quota, you may want to take a break from writing to learn a bit about the history of caffeine.

Other creative writing materials in our collection can be found here.

Happy writing and good luck, soon-to-be novelists!

On Thursday, November 5, the Cofrin Library will be participating in Wisconsin Libraries Say Cheese, a state-wide collaborative project to document one day in the life of Wisconsin’s libraries. We’ll be taking photos of activities in the library to add to a pool of photos from libraries around the state, also photographing one day in the life of their libraries during the first week of November. The photos will be unveiled to the public on November 18 on the project’s Flickr group. (There isn’t much there yet, but we’ll repost the link on the 18th when all the photos are available.) More information about the project can be found on the Campaign for Wisconsin Libraries website here.

It’s hard to believe with the calendar only on mid-October, but the weather outside suggests that both winter and flu season are definitely on the way. Current concerns about the H1N1 virus make this flu season a hot topic. There are a few great resources out there to keep track of the flu in the United States and to learn a bit more about how to avoid the flu, as well as what to do if you start feeling sick.

Pandemic.Wisconsin.gov – The Wisconsin Pandemic Flu Resource website is a great place to track the H1N1 flu in our state. There’s also information about where and when the H1N1 vaccine will be available in Wisconsin. There are individual state response pages for most of the country, including Michigan, Minnesota, and Illinois, in case you’re wondering what our neighbors are doing to combat the flu.

Brown County Department of Health – For more local information, try the Brown County Department of Health’s website on the flu.

Flu.gov – The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services provides national information about the spread of both the regular seasonal flu and H1N1 flu, and also contains information about flu vaccinations nationwide. For a more international perspective, try the World Health Organization.

CDC 2009 H1N1 Flu – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides an online resource with information about the flu, including information for particularly at-risk individuals. They also have a Twitter account which provides information regarding the spread of the flu.

UW-Madison also has a great guide to finding information about the flu (including more international and non-english sites), which you can find here.

Stay healthy!

There’s been a lot of big news lately: The 2016 Olympic Games were awarded to a South American country for the first time, for some people it’s still baseball season and others have moved onto college and professional football, NASA is conducting some groundbreaking (no pun intended) research on the moon, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today… there’s a lot going on. Here at the library we have not only daily national newspapers from around the country, we also have access to many historic newspapers available for research.

Just a few of the news databases we have are The New York Times (full-text access dates from 1851-2006), Newspaper Archive (containing full-text articles from smaller local papers such as the Stevens Point Gazette), and new this semester is Newspaper Source Plus (which contains full-text articles from state and national newspapers around the world).

See what you can find up on the fourth floor of Cofrin Library, or take a look in some of our databases to find out what happened on this day in history!
