UW-Green Bay Theatre presents ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

Little Shop of Horrors

GREEN BAY — A cult classic movie has found its way from the list of 1960s “B” movies, to a 1986 re-make—starring Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, John Candy and Bill Murray—to playhouses across the world and lately, to the University Theatre stage at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Prof. John Mariano directs an all-student cast in the upcoming production of “Little Shop of Horrors.”

All performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 14-15, and Nov. 20-22. Advance tickets are $22 for adults and $15 for UW-Green Bay students, seniors and children under age 18. Tickets at the door are $3 more, except for UW-Green Bay students.

Set in a failing flower shop on “Skid Row,” attendant Seymour Krelborn is on the verge of losing his job until owner, Mr. Mushnik, learns he’s been nurturing a strange plant that Seymour named Audrey II after his co-worker and crush, Audrey. Trouble grows as fast as the plant when Seymour discovers Audrey II has a taste for blood and a hunger for humans. Can Seymour and Audrey stop it before this blood-thirsty vegetation gets an appetite that’s too big to control?

“On the fun scale it should be pretty high,” Mariano said. “That’s obviously our goal. It’s a very, very funny play… The humor is kind of cartoonish. It’s over the top. There’s a giant plant that keeps growing and eating people so it should be a lot of fun.”
The cast features five main characters and a supporting cast of four others.

The lead role of Seymour Krelborn is played by Matt Walton, a sophomore from Wisconsin Rapids. Walton has been in UW-Green Bay productions of “L’Oreto” and “Urinetown.”

Molly LeCaptain, a junior from New Franken, takes on the role of Audrey Fulquard. She co-starred in her high school’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors,” and has been in UW-Green Bay’s “Urinetown” and “An Enemy of the People.”

Zach McLain, an experienced senior from Fence, plays Mr. Mushnik. McLain has played roles in “Midsummer Nights Dream,” “Forum,” “The Laramie Project,” “Red Herring,” “Urinetown,” and more.

Tyler Delsart, a sophomore from Green Bay, has the hair for the cool Dr. Orin Scrivello, DDS. This is his first role at UW-Green Bay. Delsart has performed in productions of “Grease,” “Bye Bye Birdie” “Our Town” and “The Wizard of Oz.”

And who can forget Audrey II, voiced by Dustin James Wagner, a junior from Pulaski, and played by Cody Heil, a senior from Edgar. This is Wagner’s first role at UW-Green Bay. Heil has been in a number of productions including “Chicago,” “Urinetown,” “An Enemy of the People,” “The Sleeper,” and more.

Supporting actors include Noel Fricke, a freshman from Campbellsport, as Ronette; Erin LeCloux, a junior from Luxemburg, as Crystal; Katie Pugh, a junior from Summit Lake as Chiffon; and Matt Harris, a freshman from Racine, who plays multiple extra roles.
