Alumnus killed, student injured in Walworth County crash

Matthew B. Kehl of Wausau, a former student employee, active Student Government SUFAC (Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee) leader and Alumni Board member, was pronounced dead at the scene of the car-tractor trailer collision, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He was 25.
Current student and active Student Government Association leader Sophie Nelson, a Public Administration major from Kenosha and Kehl’s longtime girlfriend, was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. Sophie is expected to be released from the hospital soon.
Kehl’s family is planning a memorial service, possibly for early next week, but arrangements are incomplete at this time, according to Kehl’s father, Steve Kehl. Helke Funeral Home of Wausau is assisting the family. UW-Green Bay’s Student Government Association, Dean of Students Office and Alumni Association are sending expressions of sympathy and support including cards and flowers to both families. Several current students and staff are planning to attend the services if they are able.
Current SUFAC leaders are organizing a local remembrance for Kehl, which will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 20) at Cliffhangers, 2850 Humboldt Road, Green Bay. The informal event will give attendees a chance to share memories of Kehl while enjoying dollar burgers, a SUFAC tradition, according to a Facebook page dedicated to the event. UW-Green Bay’s Counseling Services office, extension 2380, encourages students and others to seek help if they are having difficulty coping with the crash. The Dean of Students Office, extension 2152, is available to answer questions or address concerns. University Communication will keep the campus community updated as to memorial arrangements and any additional details.
