Welcome back!

Dear Human Biology students,

Welcome back! Hope you had a wonderful summer and are settling nicely into your fall academic routine. The faculty of Human Biology are looking forward to working and learning with you during the 2009-2010 academic year.

By now, you’ve probably noticed we have a new Human Biology website. When you have a chance, please take a few moments to look around and become acquainted with it. The site contains valuable information (e.g., faculty advising schedules, course requirements for different emphases in the major, etc.) that will come in handy throughout the year.

Be sure to check back periodically to our new Human Biology Blog, where you will find announcements regarding upcoming events in the biological sciences, deadlines for scholarships and grants, hints for graduate and professional school applications, profiles of recent graduates, and other useful stuff. If you are part of an organization that would like to make an announcement on this blog, please send me that information by email (bauera@uwgb.edu) and I will be sure to post it.

Now, for our first departmental announcement of the year: once again this year, I am organizing a Human Biology team to represent our department in the American Cancer Society’s Make a Difference Against Breast Cancer three mile walk / run. The event is being held on Saturday morning of October 10th.

Last year, nineteen of us participated and raised nearly $1,000 for breast cancer research! I’d like to challenge all of you to participate on this year’s team.

Our program is now 500 majors strong. Imagine the money we could raise to help prevent breast cancer if each person simply pledged to raise $20 and participate in the walk!! I hope you will consider joining us. To do so, please click on this link.

Once you are on the home page, click on “Sign up”  and then “Join a Team”. Then, it will ask you for our team name; type in “Human Biology Program” (without quotations). Then, type in “University of Wisconsin – Green Bay” for our company name.

As we get closer to the date of the event, I will be contacting each of you with information about where our team will meet on the morning of the race, so that we can have a pre-race photo and the participate in the event together. There may even be some awards given out…

Hope to see you there!

Dr. Bauer
