Would you like to help host 1400 young students on campus this fall? As you think about your course options for fall, please consider applying for the 3-credit Phuture Phoenix internship.
This internship is an excellent opportunity to see how the planning and operations of a large-scale educational intervention work and to learn more about working with “at-risk” youth. The main experience for the fall will relate to the fifth grade field trip in October. You are offered a behind-the-scenes experience in planning a large scale event and you will work closely with the Director and Associate Director in preparing for the two day event. Phuture Phoenix is a donor funded program with a small staff so your experience will give you an idea of the way a small non-profit works in the community.
The other portion of the internship will be to collaborate with one other human development\psychology student in running a student group at Preble High School called FLITE. FLITE was created as an afterschool group to inform students about the possibilities for their education following high school. This group meets once a week and interns will lead the group as well as bring in guest speakers to talk to the students about their career and education. Students who are interested in school counseling or school psychology might find the internship particularly helpful, but students with a variety of career goals have benefitted from the experience.
There are prerequisites for completing a Human Development or Psychology internship, including Junior or Senior standing and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. A full list of prerequisites and information about internship requirements (e.g., 100 hours, journal) can be found on the department websites (http://www.uwgb.edu/psychology/internships/index.htm or http://www.uwgb.edu/humdev/internships/policy.asp). Please review this information carefully before expressing interest in the internship. A background check and TB test are required—paperwork for this will need to be submitted in the summer to be sure that students are ready to go in the beginning of September. The days\times the internship hours are flexible—required dates will be Tuesday and Thursday, October 9 and 11 for the field trip days.
