UWGB Parents and Families

Gail Sims-Aubert

UWGB Parents & Family,

Happy holidays! It’s hard to believe the winter holidays are but a few short weeks away. I hope you were able to reconnect and enjoy a visit from your college student over their recent break from classes. Many of them were looking forward to returning home in order to enjoy time with loved ones, good food and much undisturbed sleep before heading back to campus to prepare for their first round of final exams.

The time between now and Winter Break can be extremely stressful for your college student. This is the time when they will have the opportunity to prove they’ve retained all that they’ve learned this semester in the form of many tests, papers and projects. Many of us remember from our own experiences what that type of pressure feels like! If you are looking for ways to show your support you may consider sending them text messages just before/after their big exams, mailing cards or letters of encouragement or shipping them a small care package filled with a few of their favorite things. At heightened times of tension and anxiety, even the smallest gestures are both meaningful and impactful.

As I close out my last note of 2019, I want you to know what a pleasure it’s been to serve you and your student so far this academic year. Our newsletters will continue into next spring, but you don’t have to wait for information to reach you. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us; we would enjoy the opportunity to answer any and all of your inquiries. We can be reached at 920-465-2040. Thank you for all you do to assist your student in being successful here at UWGB!

Sincerely,

Gail Sims-Aubert

Visiting Your Student in Housing

In many instances, our students choose to travel home when it’s time to visit family. However, we want families to know that you are welcome to visit your student on campus. As you make plans to do so, please follow these practices for parking and visitor registration.

For your convenience, fifteen-minute parking zones are located near most of the residence halls and apartments on campus if you are just picking up or dropping off. However if you park in the parking lots near housing, you need to be registered to avoid a parking citation.

Students are required to register their guest’s vehicles online. Notification of the guest registration

is shared with University Police, which alerts officers to which vehicles should not be ticketed. If your student intends to host a visitor in their room or apartment, and that person will be bringing a vehicle to campus, they should follow these steps to register both the visitor and their vehicle:

#1 – Go to www.uwbg.edu/housing
#2 – Click on myResLink
#3 – Scroll down to Guest Registration and click the ‘Login Now’ icon
#4 – Click the ‘Students Login Here’ icon and enter username/password
#5 – Click on ‘Campus Box/Guests’ and again on ‘Register a Guest’
#6 – Enter all requested information

All vehicles must be parked so the license plate can clearly be seen from the driving lane.

For additional questions regarding parking permits, regulations, or citations please visit www.uwgb.edu/publicsafety/parking or contact the Parking office at 920-465-2301.

More information about guest registration and the Residence Life guest policy can be found at www.uwgb.edu/housing

Phoenix Cares

Phoenix Cares Logo

Each student matters at UW- Green Bay, regardless of which one of our four campuses they are attending.  Student success is the goal of every member of the Phoenix family.   However, sometimes students need a little help when life hits a bump in the road. The Dean of Students Office at UW-Green Bay has a program entitled Phoenix Cares to help support students when they need it the most.

The Phoenix Cares website offers information for students needing help with academics, mental health, personal safety, food resources, and even homelessness. Resources are available both on and off campus depending on the issue. It is a one-stop shop to meet our students most serious needs outside of the classroom.

The website is also a place to ask for help or report someone who needs help using our three web forms. Anyone, student, employee, or parent, can submit information about bias incidents, students who are in a difficult place and need professional assistance, or just general concerns about the campus. Think of it as a place to tell someone, when you aren’t sure who to tell. From the Phoenix Cares website we can route concerns to the best resources to help students. So please, encourage your student to say something about that friend they are worried about, or do it yourself. The sooner we know, the sooner we can help. Check out the webpage at www.uwgb.edu/phoenix-cares/

How Can I Send My Student a Package or Letter?

During the pandemic, we have seen a significant increase in the number of packages sent to students through our Student Mailroom. The Mailroom is located in the Hendrickson Community Center. On average, student employees process over 25,000 packages and mail items during the academic year alone.

For your student’s convenience, the Mailroom hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 10:00am – 7:00pm, Fridays, 10:00am – 5:00pm, and Sundays, 5:00-7:00pm

Each resident is assigned a campus mailbox that is uniquely their own.

All items delivered to the Student Mailroom must be addressed properly to ensure accurate/timely delivery. Please use the following format when sending items to your student?

Full Name
Campus Mailbox # (student’s campus box number)
Building Street Address
Green Bay, WI 54311-7070

Campus mailbox numbers are not public information. Full mailing addresses for all student residents are found in SIS, and can be provided to you by your student.

It can mean the world to a homesick student to receive a card or letter from home!  If you have questions, be sure to call our office, (920) 465-2040, so that we can help ensure receipt of your student’s mail and parcels.

Is Your Student Looking for Things to Do?

Attending college provides an opportunity to meet new people, make connections, and make new friends. During the pandemic, getting involved and meeting others can be a challenge, however with the many activities planned by various departments, there are opportunities for your students.

Students who participate in extracurricular activities in college tend to get better grades and are more satisfied with their overall college experience. Taking part in clubs, organizations, and other events allows students to meet others and create connections.

Following are some examples of opportunities for your student:

Self Care Journal Making
This is an opportunity for students to customize their own journals with stickers, buttons, and words of encouragement in hopes to uplift and encourage them to keep pushing through this semester. At this event, attendees who have registered using the Qualtrics survey will receive: lip balm, hand sanitizer, pocket tissue, and buttons with words of encouragement.  Students will be able to choose their journals, and the materials needed to design them.

Tuesday, October 6, 2020, 3:00-5:00 p.m., University Union Phoenix C

Kahoot Tournament
We will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month using Kahoot. Come and play for a chance to win pass points.

Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 6:00 p.m.

NFL Pick’em
Each week, fill out your form for which teams you think will win. Submissions are due Thursday of each week. Points will be calculated and winners will be picked at the end of the season.  Students can play online or in person at the Phoenix Club desk. This event is ongoing.

Hypnotist Jim Wand
Jim Wand holds a Ph. D. in Psychology and is considered to be one of the top hypnotic entertainers in the world. He has performed in every state and 10 foreign countries. This is his 28th consecutive year performing at UWGB!

This is a virtual event, however 20 lucky students will be chosen to be hypnotized or watch the show live in-person. Students can enter the drawing by Sunday, October 4 to be eligible.

Thursday, October 8, 2020, 8:00pm – 9:30pm

Guest Speaker from NY Yankees on Statistics in Recruiting
Hear from Adam Caker, Scout for the New York Yankees on Statistics in Recruiting. This event is hosted by the Cofrin School of Business and is open to all UWGB students, faculty, and staff.

Saturday, October 10, 2020, 7:00pm-8:00pm

For more information about these events and more, please see the UWGB Master Calendar.

Re-Contracting for 2021-2022 Housing

Students who currently live in on-campus housing will soon need to decide if they are living on-campus for the 2021-2022 academic year. Students who currently are contracted for housing have the option to re-contract and stay on-campus next academic year.

Re-contracting has its benefits! Students who re-contract will:

  • Be eligible for year-round housing contracts – Need housing for the summer and academic year? No problem! Year-round housing contracts also guarantee students a space in our private bedroom apartments from May 2020 to May 2021.
  • Select their own housing prior to new incoming students – Students who re-contract will select from our three housing options on-campus (residence hall, shared-bedroom apartment, and private-bedroom apartments) in March. Re-contracting students are the first group to select housing for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Have the option to choose their own roommates – Students who want to live with specific people can choose to live with up to four other students.
  • Have the option to keep the same room/apartment they had this year (Room Retention) – if a student really liked where they lived last year, they can retain their space and live there again next year. Room retention is dependent on the building and the contract. For more details, your student can contact our office at (920) 465-2040.
  • Not have to pay the deposit again – deposits roll over from year to year if a student lives consistently on-campus.

The re-contracting process opens on Wednesday, November 18 at 9:00 a.m. and ends on Wednesday, March 18, 2021 at 11:59 p.m.

Regardless of accommodations type, students enjoy the following amenities: private bathrooms, furnished rooms and apartments, high-speed internet access including Wi-Fi, high definition cable television service, and laundry facilities in each building.

We hope that your student has had a positive living experience on campus, and chooses to return to campus housing for another year. Many of our students remain on campus through graduation due to the variety of living options, and the many opportunities to grow and learn in a residential setting.

If your student has questions about the re-contracting process, please have them visit the Office of Residence Life, call (920) 465-2040, or email housing@uwgb.edu.

Welcome UWGB Parents & Families!

Gail Sims-Aubert

UWGB Parents & Families,

The hope is that by now your UWGB student is calling and texting with all kinds of exciting news about their academic success, newly formed friendships and their involvement in campus activities. For some, moving away from home for the first time and into an unfamiliar environment can be overwhelming and life changing for all members of the family. For both you and your student, these first few weeks may have been filled with anxiety as all strive to settle in to the ‘new normal’. Whether your student is one of those who is charging fast forward into their college experience or one that is being a tad more cautious, please know that the Office of Residence Life is ready to collaborate with you in order to provide the assistance that is most appropriate for your college student.

This e-newsletter is intended to be a resource for you so that you too, can be equipped with answers to your college student’s questions – there will be a lot of them! This publication will be produced quarterly, and we will actively strive to provide you with information that will directly benefit your student while they reside in campus housing. I have every confidence you will find these updates to be a good source of information about what students who choose to live on campus are experiencing or what they need to know to successfully navigate the academic year. However, if there are questions that this newsletter doesn’t answer, all you need to do is send your student our way. There is a Resident Assistant (RA), an Area Coordinator (AC) or an office staff member available to them 24 hours a day. Thank you for the support you give them every day, and thank you for allowing us to partner with them to create a memorable and educational out-of-classroom experience.

Sincerely,
Gail Sims-Aubert

New University Chief of Police Welcomes Students

Chief of Police Photo

On behalf of the members of the UW-Green Bay Police Department, I would like to take a moment to share a little about our department. I encourage you to look through our website and learn about our mission, our officers, and about the many services that we provide to the UW-Green Bay community.  Here you will find important information about campus safety, crime prevention, crime statistics, criminal alerts, and programs offered by our department. https://www.uwgb.edu/public-safety/chief-s-welcome/chiefs-welcome/

The responsibility for the overall safety and law enforcement services for the University rests with the UW-Green Bay Police Department. The men and women of the University Police continually strive to provide an environment where all members of the community can safely learn, work, live and visit. Our efforts are greatly enhanced when members of the campus community take an active role in personal safety and crime prevention. Please encourage your students to report any suspicious activity or crimes to the University Police at 465-2300 (non-emergency) or 911 (emergency).

Our full service police department serves the campus community 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. In addition to patrol operations and emergency response, our officers interact with the students on a regular basis. Our department offers multiple free training courses (Self Defense, Active Shooter training, AED, etc.) as well as many community policing activities (coffee with a cop, bowling with a cop, group presentation, etc.).  I encourage your student to take part in these programs.

The campus will communicate emergency messages to students in a number of ways (e mails, Public Address systems, electronic notification, etc.). Our most effective way of communicating to students is through an emergency text program called GB Alert. Your students can sign up to receive these emergency text messages free of charge at:
https://www.uwgb.edu/public-safety/emergency-information/gb-alert-emergency-notification-system/

If you or your student have additional questions about our department please feel free to e mail us at police@uwgb.edu or call us at (920) 465-2300.
