This week’s spotlight is on Veronica Wierer. Her nickname is V and she is a communications major with an emphasis in photography and a minor in design arts. In her free time, Veronica likes to take photos and watch movies.

Veronica credits her biggest accomplishments to getting the SHA position and working in her internship for the UWGB Marketing and Communication Department. She is especially proud when her photos are used in slideshows for the university, which most of her photos are used.

This is Veronica’s first summer as a SHA and her favorite part of being a SHA is meeting new people and getting to know them. Veronica said that being a SHA has taught her responsibility and respect.

Best of luck to Veronica and thanks for her dedication!

Do you live a “green” lifestyle? Do you like teaching your peers what it means to “live green”? If yes, they you should apply to be an Eco-Rep!

An Eco-Rep is a peer mentor that encourages students to live a “green” lifestyle by educating them on ways to recycle waste and conserve energy, leading to a more sustainable lifestyle. The mission statement for UW-Green Bay’s Eco-Reps is “Develop sustainable living habits of students residing on the UWGB campus so that they may reflect the reputation UWGB has as ‘Eco-U’”.

UW-Green Bay’s journey to having Eco-Reps has been on the sustainability coordinator, Laurie Case’s to-do list since 2011. In the Spring 2013 semester, two interning students really helped to get things going. Melissa and Amanda were working on internships for their Certificate in Environmental Sustainability and Business through UWGB’s Environmental Management and Business Institute and were able to pull together information from various other Eco-Rep programs and develop the framework for an Eco-Rep program here at UWGB. This will be the first semester that the program will have four Eco-Reps who will work with primarily freshman students. After this pilot year, the program will be reevaluated to see what the next steps should be.

Now right down to it: What does an Eco-Rep do? An Eco-Rep will build collaboration with the RA staff to promote green living to residents through programming, informational sessions, and other various ways. The main goal is to initiate processes that encourage consumption reduction, use of alternative and public transportation, proper waste management, energy efficient lifestyles, and sustainable living and enable behavior changing practices. As an Eco-Rep you will have to recruit residents to attend designated sustainability-related campus events, pose and distribute educational materials and create and eco-themed bulletin board, attend training sessions and monthly meetings with Residence Life, and other related tasks. The Eco-Rep position is a paid position that pays $500 per semester for approx. 8-10 hours of work a week.

In order to be considered for the Eco-Rep position you must:

-Be a full time student

                -Living on campus

                -Sophomore standing or higher

-Have no disciplinary or academic probations

                -Have/maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher

Have self-motivation and willing to take initiative

-Must live a “green” lifestyle OR Be commit to start

Applications are due by July 15th and can be sent to Sustainability@uwgb.edu

As summer heats up, you might be wondering what the amazing benefits of living on campus are. In this blog we are going to count down the top ten reasons living on campus is not only a god idea, but an amazing experience.

#10 Academic Success: Many students who live on campus earn higher grades and graduate at higher rates than their peers who live elsewhere. Remember, your academic success is our top priority.

#9 Employment Opportunities: Working on campus saves commuting time and expense. Also, your campus employer will be supportive of your academic studies coming first.

#8 Affordability: Living on campus is often cheaper than commuting from off campus. Your on-campus housing cost includes all utilities, cable television service, internet access, security services and more.

#7 Safety and Security: The campus is served around the clock by Public Safety Officers. The officers monitor the academic buildings, housing facilities, parking lots, and grounds to ensure your safety.

#6 Convenience: Living on campus means living right where you study, work and have fun; freeing up time and cutting down on costly commuting expenses.

#5 Around the Clock & Calendar Service: Campus housing is open 365 days a year. Plus staff is available to serve you during the evening, weekend, and holiday hours too.

#4 Community Center: The Residence Life Community Center offers a place to meet other students, study and participate in social activities. It also offers and information desk, student mailroom, and computer service center.

#3 Social and Recreational Activities: There’s always something to do on campus. From concerts, dances and comedians to intramural sports, student government and student organizations; there is something for everyone.

#2 Resident Assistants: One of the best things about living on campus is having an RA. RA’s are student leaders who live on campus and their role is to help you achieve the living and learning experience.

#1 Roommates: Having a roommate is one of the best things about living on campus. Many lifelong friendships have started as roommates at college.

This week’s spotlight is on Angela Bontempo. Her nicknames include Angie and Ang and she will be a junior this coming fall with an intended social work major. In her free time, Angie likes to crochet, sing, go shopping, hang out with friends and family, randomly dance, arts and crafts, bake, read, and be silly.

Angie credits one of her biggest accomplishments to helping start an on-campus organization called “Unchained”. This org educates people on human trafficking and was awarded an “Of the Year” award as well. Other accomplishments for Angie are learning how to crochet and getting the SHA position.

This is Angie’s first summer as a SHA and her favorite part of being a SHA so far is getting to meet new people. Angie said “I get to know the sweet SHA team and the residents in my building.” Being a SHA can teach a leader a lot and as for Angie, she said “So far being a SHA has taught me the importance of organization, managing time, and being patient. I have been learning how important a schedule is and that if there is a plan of action of when things have to be done I am able to have more time to just slow down and be patient.”

Best of luck to Angie this summer and thanks for all her hard work!

Your Housing Contract Ends at Saturday, May 18 at 5:30 pm

Students are encouraged to vacate their room or apartment within 24 hours of their last final exam and must leave no later than Saturday, May 18 at 5:30 pm unless arrangements for summer housing or an extended stay have been made. You must clean, remove your belongings, and vacate your apartment or residence hall room by this time.

Check-out Procedures

All students must complete the online Express Check-Out Process when moving out. A walk-up computer are available kiosk is available in the Community Center, if you need a computer. Failure to check out online will result in a $50 improper check-out charge. Please do not check out until you are ready to leave, door access will terminate upon check-out.

Cleaning Instructions

In order to avoid cleaning charges, make sure to clean your room/apartment thoroughly.
Students do not need to change the current configuration of their beds (bunked, junior lofted, etc.), however beds must be properly assembled, and all furniture provided must be in the room upon check-out to avoid damage charges.

Submit Your Maintenance Requests Now

If you are aware of items in need of repair in your room or apartment, please submit an online maintenance request for these items now.
