Can you believe it’s the last week of classes?! To say this semester flew by is an understatement! With the end of the year comes cleaning and moving out. Each dorm or apartment will be receiving a responsibility for cleaning form. This will allow you and your roommates to divide up the tasks however you want.

Things to clean/check/remove include:

Carpets/floors

Cupboards, countertops, medicine cabinets, shelves, vanities, desks, dressers & other furniture

Bathroom/vanity area

Walls (remove tape & poster putty)

Tack strips, hutches, corkboards, & bulletin boards

Recycle bins/waste baskets

Windows (clean, close, & latch)

Light bulbs (burned out?)

Closets/storage areas

Kitchens (refrigerator – turn onto lowest level when emptied, stove/oven – cleaning instructions)

All of these things have been sent to you via e-mail titled, “Important End-of-Year Housing Information.”

Students must be fully moved out of their dorms or apartments by Saturday, May 12th at 5:30 pm. That means that if you have a lot of items to bring home, you may want to start bringing things home now.

When you have moved everything out of your dorm or apartment and it is fully cleaned, make sure to go online and complete the express check-out. Failure to do so will result in a $50 improper check-out charge. After you move out, dorms and apartments will be assessed for cleaning and damages.

Is there anything that you don’t want anymore? Don’t leave it behind! There will be a container at the Community Center where you can discard canned food, clean clothing, school supplies and household items that are in working condition.

Finally, submit any maintenance requests ASAP to avoid damage charges!

Good luck on exams!!

Hey UWGB students! The end of the semester is only a few weeks away, and I’m sure you feel like you have hundreds of things to accomplish and zero motivation and/or time to do any of them. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. This feeling is felt by all students and can be a little overwhelming. The pressure and stress of the last few weeks may be due to previous procrastination, or just a mess of class assignments all happening at the same time. For underclassmen, you’re probably worrying about planning next semester (your class schedule, housing, etc). For seniors, you’re most likely stressing about finding a job. Regardless, everyone is dealing with deadlines, final papers, projects, presentations, and finals week. This blog is probably stressing you out just reading it, so let’s get to the good stuff.

There are some great solutions to calming down and enjoying the rest of your semester! Want to hear about them?

Spend time with friends. You are all feeling the same stress, so feel it together! Vent, go out and have fun, watch a movie, or enjoy the few days of nice weather we have. Either way, being around people is going to make you feel better. You can’t be working on projects and papers every second of every day, so allow yourself some time to veg out and relax.

Make lists and prioritize. I know not everyone is a “list person,” but make yourself be one these last couple weeks; it really works! Keeping track of everything you have to do on paper is a great visual. Give yourself a timeline of when you want to get things done..and try doing them ahead of time! Procrastination at the end of the semester is always the worst feeling, but if you keep up to speed now, you won’t be on the verge of crying later.

Plan ahead for papers/exams. This goes along with making lists and prioritizing. Start your paper early and work on it in small chunks, or study a little bit at a time for a test. Doing this will prevent ridiculous cramming sessions later. It may seem like you don’t have time to do this right now, but you really do! Pay attention to times when you’re sitting around on Facebook or Pinterest when you could be doing something productive, even for a little while.

Get some sleep. I know from experience that sleep is usually not a top priority for college students at this time of the year. But you know what? It should be! Sleeping is one of the best things you can do for your body to reenergize and keep focus. Losing sleep one night and sleeping for hours on end the next night will not “catch you up” on sleep. Try to get 8 hours of sleep a night (I know, that might be far-fetched). If that’s not possible, at least get a nap or two in during the day. It doesn’t have to be long; naps are most effective when they are 15-30 minutes long. So what I’m saying is…make sleep a priority! You won’t be able to concentrate or think properly without it.

Eat right. Put down that full bag of Easter candy! Now! Don’t overindulge yourself on junk food and late night snacking (that’s what makes you gain weight). You can obviously eat your Easter candy, I was joking, but don’t make a huge habit out of it. Snack on healthy things like fruits and vegetables. On the other side of that, don’t starve yourself. Make sure you eat enough! The most important thing is to eat breakfast. It gives you a quicker start in the morning and will leave you feeling a bit more energized.

Drink water. Yes, I know. It’s so plain. But your body needs it! Sugar-packed drinks are going to eventually make you crash later. Keep yourself hydrated otherwise your energy is going to drop.

Exercise. Whether you already have a routine or you’re just starting up, you should try and exercise in some way at least 3 times a week. It’s good for your body, and it’s actually a great way to relieve stress. There are many options to exercising! One obvious place to work out is at the Kress. There are tons of machines, equipment, and a track to help you do what you need to do. There are also classes you can take. If you don’t want to work out there, you can always go outside. Not every day is sunny, but you should definitely take advantages of the days that are. You can run, walk, bike, etc. Finally, if neither of those options sound good to you, you can always work out in the comfort of your dorm or apartment. There are tons of work out videos to pop in or watch on YouTube. The great thing about working out is that there are many ways to do it!

Hopefully these tips help you calm down a bit and enjoy the remainder of your semester! Yes, things can be stressful, but there are great ways to utilize your time if you plan them out. Appreciate the time you have left this year, and do your best on those finals!

You might ask yourself, “Did a large group of people just run past my window in their underwear?” The answer is yes. But if you’re asking yourself this question, a better question directed to you might be, “Why aren’t you one of those people?”

UW-Green Bay’s 2nd Annual Undie Run is this Thursday, April 5th! So…what is the Undie Run?

The Undie Run is a way to give to the community by taking your gently used clothing and shoes, donating them to charity, and running wildly together through campus in your underwear.

UWGB will be collecting your gently used clothing and shoes to donate to the New Community Shelter, Inc. The New Community Shelter provides emergency and temporary shelter, resource referrals, education, meals, and support to men and women who need it.

The program will begin at the Community Center, starting with clothing and shoe donations at 6pm. The fun one mile run/walk around campus housing will follow at 6:45pm. You are allowed to keep your clothes on or strip down to your undies, but nudity is not permitted. All participants will receive a free “Undie Run” cup for supporting those less fortunate in the Green Bay area!

Make sure you check out the Undie Run video and join the Facebook page! For any accommodations, please call the Community Center at (920) 465-2040 and ask for Laura Vietmeyer.

Make sure to go to the housing options page to see 2D, 3D, and interactive floor plans!

Also keep in mind that Harden and Robishaw will be getting some updates over the summer! They include:

Window blinds

Fresh paint

New air conditioners

Spring break is over and now it’s time to start thinking about next year! That’s right everyone, we are officially in the re-contracting period.

Starting today through March 30, you can go here to re-contract online. This process is no longer just an application, however. It includes agreeing to and accepting the terms and conditions of the housing contract.

There are two things you should keep in mind before re-contracting:

1. Decide whether you want academic year (August-May) or year-round (May-May) housing.

2. Figure out who you want to live with next year (this can include people already living on campus, people that are new-to-housing, and/or freshmen).

Once you contract online, you should receive a confirmation e-mail within 48 hours.

What’s next? Start looking at all of the housing options to see where you and your roommates might want to live! We have great facilities, shared bedroom apartments, and private bedroom apartments. It’s best to choose a few different options so when room selection day comes, you are prepared.

You will receive room selection “tickets” via e-mail on April 9, which will provide you with your priority number and the date and time you can select your room or apartment. Room selection will take place April 18-20 in the Kress Events Center – a new location this year! The person attending room selection should bring their ticket, along with each roommate’s ticket, to reserve a room or apartment.

With only 7 weeks left of classes, there are probably tons of things you have to do. Secure housing today and you won’t have to worry!

Have a great week!

UWGB – are you bogged down in midterm papers and tests and need some time off? No worries, Spring break begins Saturday, March 10! What will you do to relax? Visit a different state or country? Head to an in-state resort? Stay on campus? Connect with family and friends at home? Regardless of what you do, the break will be much-needed and (hopefully) a good time.

Staying At Home?

Spring break can be a great time to relax at home. Here are some ideas of what to do:

1. Look for jobs and internships. Searching early is the best way to find a job or internship. Maybe you’ll find something you would love to do!

2. Apply for scholarships. This may seem school-related, and it kind of is. But it means money to help you go to school!

3. Catch up in class. I know, this is crazy to even suggest, but would you rather be ahead now or procrastinate until exam week? Doing a little bit each day may push you ahead without making you feel like you spent your break writing a paper or reading a textbook.

4. Read a book. Not a textbook, but a book for pure enjoyment (yes, those do exist).

5. Do something FUN! This means whatever you interpret it to mean. Cook, scrapbook, run, dance, go on an adventure, go to the museum, go to the movies, etc. This is your free time, so use it wisely! (Don’t spend all your time on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest!)

6. Relax. Self-explanatory.

Going Somewhere?

The obvious tip is to have fun! But there are also some safety tips to be aware of in certain situations.

1. On the road. Buckle up! This is important not only because it’s the law, but also because it will keep you safe. Although you can’t force others to buckle up, you can let them know that it’s important to you. When traveling in a group, you should take turns driving. This way, one person doesn’t get overtired and potentially get into an accident. The person sitting shotgun should stay awake with the driver to make sure the driver is well rested.

2. At a hotel. Keep your doors closed and locked, and don’t let strangers in! This may seem pretty obvious, but it’s important.

3. Healthy choices. If you choose to consume alcoholic beverages (students of legal age), minimize risks associated with such activities. Follow all rules, policies, and laws. The number one tip for those choosing to drink over break is make healthy, wise, low-risk choices. Make sure you drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

4. At the beach. Wear sunscreen (at least SPF 15)! Skin protection and awareness has become very big in the past few years, so don’t forget what you’ve learned about it. Keep your skin safe! Remember, you can still burn if it’s cloudy (don’t learn this the hard way). Again, when you’re out in the sun, stay hydrated. If you drink on the beach, keep in mind that the effects of alcohol are maximized in the sun.

5. In the ocean. Make sure you swim using the buddy system. Keep track of everyone, especially if the waves get a little crazy. Watch for rip tides and rip currents.

6. When going out. This is another instance where it’s important to use the buddy system. NEVER let anyone wander off alone or with a stranger. Make sure if you have a drink to hang onto it at all times; don’t set it down! Most importantly, when you go out with friends, go home with friends.

Hopefully these tips will help you have the best Spring break ever

On a side note, maintenance will be working hard over break on some upkeep in residence halls and apartments. Door and smoke detector batteries will be replaced. Maintenance also will be working on any requests sent in before break. If you’re having problems with drains, light bulbs, towel bars, or anything else, send in your maintenance requests now!

Have a great week off! Have fun, relax, and be safe!

If you have visited the Housing and Residence Life website sometime between last semester and now, you may have noticed a few changes.

That’s right everyone, we launched a brand spankin’ new website with some pretty amazing features! Ready to hear all about them?

1. Ask GB Housing.

We’ve always had this feature, but now it’s right on the main page and waiting for your use. For those of you who haven’t used it, Ask GB Housing is very helpful. You can ask any question about housing or living on campus and it generates the best answer for you.

2. Drop-Down Menu & Footer.

The drop-down menu on the left-hand side of every page makes it fairly easy to navigate to different pages on the website. When subpages have a lot of content on them, you can quickly search the bottom footer to see where you want to navigate to next. Overall, it is simple to find what you are looking for on the new site!

3. Office of Residence Life Blog.

The Res Life blog feeds right onto the main page, making it convenient for those trying to keep up with new and exciting posts. The blog will be used to update you on important information regarding housing, living on campus, and great events and activities that are planned. Don’t forget to keep checking back to see what the blog has in store for you each week!

4. Social Media.

Res Life social media can easily be found in the top right corner of the page. We have Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube accounts. So don’t hesitate to “like” us on Facebook, “follow” us on Twitter, check out our photos on Flickr, and watch our videos on YouTube! Also, we will be adding a new media page in the next few days. In a nutshell, the media page will be an integrated social timeline of all our social media content from every account. It will be a great way to get all of the information you want to see in one place!

5. Calendar Feeds.

Want to attend an event but can’t remember what time it starts or where it is? The Housing and Residence Life page has calendar feeds to help you.

6. myResLink.

This feature allows you to do it all!

Apply & Contract for Housing – secure your housing for next year!

Campus Box Information – look up your campus box number and combo you always forget!

Cancel a Housing Request

Damage Charge Appeal

Express Check-In/Check-Out – this includes pre check-in, view initial room assignment, & complete room condition report

Guest Registration – register your overnight guests

Maintenance Requests – send in your request for repair work

PIN Change – you can change your PIN, but you will also need to update your ID at the front desk of the Community Center

Room Assignment – view your current room assignment and roommates

With all of these, you simply login with your student user name and password and get access to do what you need.

7. Floor Planners.

Lucky number seven brings us to the most exciting feature of the new website. There are three types of floor planners: 2D, 3D, and interactive.

The 2D planners show you the dimensions of the apartment or residence hall you are looking at.

The 3D floor planners give you a side and top view, and it looks very realistic; there are even fun bedding and Phoenix posters for a little decoration!

Finally, there is the interactive feature. This is where you can really have some fun! There is a library of images to decorate and furnish your apartment or dorm with. You can even put a cow or sheep in your room (Side note: Do not attempt this in your real housing building)! These new and improved ways of virtually touring the housing facilities are great!

Make sure you look around the website yourself! Beyond the features mentioned, there are pages of information related to your community on campus, leadership groups and opportunities, services and amenities, employment, and much more. Enjoy the new website, and as always, enjoy your life on campus!

Do you want to become a student leader but aren’t sure how to go about it?

Apply to be a Resident Assistant (RA)! RAs are students that are trained by the Office of Residence Life to be a helpful resource for those of us living on campus.

Some of the things RAs do include:
•Develop a community on your floor/wing
•Assist in peer counseling (Have an issue with your roommate? RAs can help!)
•Train in leadership development
•Enforce policies
•Help you succeed

They also plan exciting programs to bring the on-campus community together. Some examples include ice cream socials, tie dying t-shirts, and most recently, Justin Timberlake’s 31st birthday party.

Being an RA gives you the opportunity to lead others and make sure they enjoy the place they live.

The applications for this position, which need to include three references, must be sent to ra_selection@uwgb.edu by Tuesday, February 14th at noon. Click here to find out more about the selection process.

So go ahead and apply! Being an RA is a respectable accomplishment that can enhance your educational experience, help you realize your abilities, and build your resume. To learn about other ways you can lead on campus, visit the leadership groups page.
