At the very beginning of my statistics course at UWGB, the students learn graphing techniques and how to describe data by describing the shape of the graphs they make.  The most common shapes are normal, bi-modal, positively skewed, and negatively skewed.  In order to really make this information “stick,” I have students go home and create different shaped distributions using household items and take pictures of them to bring to class the next day and share.  This exercise is first, and foremost, a lot of fun.  It also accomplishes several other outcomes as well.  The students get to think about something they learned in class while outside of class and apply it.  Application of information is a terrific tool to help them remember the concept.  In addition, taking pictures on their phones and sharing with the class is a productive use of cell phones in class.  For me, acknowledging that cell phones can actually be a learning tool and a way to communicate class material is very valuable. This is a very easy and fun way to apply learning.  Here are some examples of things I have in my office.

  1. we want to thank you for this wonderful blog post. As a person dealing with cre loans data I find it very important.

  2. There are several ways through which teachers try to bring interest and attraction in courses that are really dry in nature. I am an associate professor at Mount Lincoln University and it is indeed a challenging task to develop students’ interest in topics where they are least interested.
