Welcome!

The purpose of this website is to share the results of the Strategic Visioning Summit held on May 5-6, 2008 and to seek feedback from the broad community of library users, library supporters, and library staff.

The Visioning Summit was sponsored by the Council on Library and Network Development (COLAND) in cooperation with Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster.  The Summit was an invitational event attended by 100 key library leaders and library advocates from across the State of Wisconsin.  In developing the vision for libraries, Summit participants took into consideration Superintendent Burmaster’s 21st century education initiatives as well as Governor Doyle’s Grow Wisconsin plan.

The Beginnings Report on the Future of the Library documents the main outcomes of the Visioning Summit.  Everyone is encouraged to get involved in creating the future of Wisconsin libraries.  Please respond to the ideas in this report through this blog, implement these ideas in your communities, or volunteer to work on action items.  Working together libraries and their communities will continue to sustain and transform the educational vitality and economic prosperity of Wisconsin.

Another opportunity for discussion will be at the Wisconsin Library Association Annual Conference in Middleton, on Thursday, November 6 at 4:00 pm.

Thank you for your interest in and advocacy for the future of libraries in Wisconsin!

Kathy Pletcher,  Chair
Council on Library and Network Development

Background and Activities of the Visioning Summit

This section of the Beginnings Report attempts to describe the purpose of and preparation for the Summit and a summary of the activities during the Summit.  Since you were there, you may not find this section very interesting, but once we release this report to a wider audience it will be helpful to have some backgound.  Please comment on whether you think this section needs more detail.  For example, should we include more information on the key note speakers and give more of a flavor of the engery and excitement of the Summit.  Thanks for your input.

Recommendations for DPI 2009/11 Budget Request

Posted by Kathy Pletcher

One of the goals of the Visioning Summit was to identify short term (1-3 years) and longer term recommendations for the Department of Public Instruction.  This section of the Beginnings Report identifies 4 short term recommendations to the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the 2009/11 Budget.  These recommendations have been endorsed by COLAND and forwarded to the Superintendent.  There 16 items listed under long term (2010-2018) that were taken from the flip charts.  These have not been discussed by COLAND yet and we are very interested in your thoughts about these items.  Please comment on the importance or impact of these items and which ones you feel are worth putting engery into.  Thanks for your input.

Communications Plan

Posted by Kathy Pletcher

This section of the Beginnings Report describes the initial steps fo what will be a longer-term process.  A chief learning at the Summit was that libraries are already contributing in substantial ways to the economic and educational well-being of Wisconsin citizens. But far too few people know about it – especially the taxpayers. A critical task now is to expand the base of support for libraries within state and local governments. Equally essential will be giving librarians across the state the “permission” and the tools for telling the “library story” clearly and persuasively. The process of building support through strategic communication takes time. But we must begin.   Please comment on Key Messages and the communications plan.  Thanks for your input.
