Appointment of Dr. Julia E. Wallace as Provost
| May 20, 2009
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Julia E. Wallace, executive vice president and provost of Central Michigan University, for the position of provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW-Green Bay.
Dr. Wallace comes highly recommended from her many colleagues. Her character and ability are outstanding, and her continual support for students and for faculty is also very strong. I am certain she will do an excellent job for the University.
At Central Michigan, the state’s fourth-largest public university with more than 27,000 students, Wallace has oversight for five undergraduate colleges: Business Administration, Communication and Fine Arts, Education and Human Services, Health Professions, and Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences. She also provides leadership to Student Services, the College of Graduate Studies, Office of Sponsored Programs, ProfEd (online/off-campus programs), Information Technology, Library, Office of International Education and Study Abroad, and the Office of Institutional Diversity.
Prior to her time at Central Michigan, Wallace served as dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Northern Iowa. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the State University of New York College at Oswego, her Master’s of Arts in Experimental Psychology from the State University of New York at Binghamton, a Master’s of Science in Preventative Medicine and Environmental Health from the University of Iowa, and a Doctorate of Experimental Psychology from the State University of New York at Binghamton.
I’d like to express my gratitude to the 11-member search-and-screen committee and committee chair Prof. Tim Meyer for a job well done in finding Dr. Wallace and a strong pool of candidates.
I’d also like to express my thanks to Interim Chancellor David Ward and Interim Provost Bill Laatsch for their guidance as the University transitions to new leadership, particularly with regard to the search and selection of a new provost.
Provost Laatsch postponed a long-awaited and well-deserved retirement to remain with UW-Green Bay following the departure of Provost Sue Hammersmith. Chancellor Ward returned to UW-Green Bay, where he had his first teaching position, to lead the University after the departure of Chancellor Bruce Shepard.
These two highly skilled professionals have done an excellent job keeping UW-Green Bay on the right course and preparing me for my arrival to campus on June 1. I would personally like to extend my thanks and gratitude to them for helping make the new leadership transition as smooth as possible.
Dr. Wallace will start in her new role on Monday, July 27. I know she will do well.
I look forward to seeing you all on campus in a few short weeks.
Sincerely,
Thomas K. Harden
Chancellor-designee
