Informal Writing Assignments

In November 2012, Maryellen Weimer of The Teaching Professor at Faculty Focus, discussed Writing Across the Curriculum, and in particular, the benefits of informal writing. In addition to improving writing skills, integrating writing assignments into your curriculum also promotes learning – “it clarifies ideas, generates reasons, and crystallizes arguments”.

In the article Weimer describes an accessible informal writing assignment that would work well face-to-face or online. The reflection component at the end of the semester is particularly worthy of consideration

UWGB Community: Does anyone currently have students perform informal writing, particularly in non-writing couses? If so, we’d love to hear from you. Let us know about your experience in the comments.
