For students and faculty alike, the challenges of dealing with a ‘freeloader’ in small group work, is a source of stress and frustration. These students are slow to volunteer for tasks, consistently miss deadlines and avoid group meetings.

Maryellen Weimer, in Faculty Focus, suggests that we reconsider the problem as these students may not be sabotaging the group work because they are unmotivated or lazy, but because they don’t understand the material – Faculty Focus: Noncontributing Members in Small Groups: An Important Distinction
