Mostly Indian and Other Fables

An exhibition of contemporary Native art, co-curated by Dr. Stephen Perkins and Amii John, will be held in the Lawton Gallery at UW-Green Bay Oct. 7-Nov. 4. This exhibition of works by twenty-four Native artists from across the United States and Canada illustrates the complex nature of the contemporary Native experience. The works celebrate the many ways in which Native artists are working with old and new traditions in order to create works that respond not only to the present but also the past and the future. See the Lawton Gallery calendar.

Photo memory 70 - Prairie ensemble, posed in costume

In this photo, five figures dressed in prairie costume stand in tall grass, posed before a weathered shed. The men are wearing denim bib overalls, one rests his hand on a 12-string acoustic guitar and another other, the barrel of a rifle. The women wear calico print dresses with ruffled aprons, one with a prairie bonnet on. We believe this photo to be from the 1970′s. Can you provide any more information? Photo memory 52 - Students Dancing

In the photo above, students dressed in jeans and tie dyed t-shirts are engaged in what could be a contemporary dance. They’re intertwined reaching their hands forward to make contact with another other of the group, gracefully holding various lunge poses. Do you know anything about this photo, who’s in it, when it was taken, or what they’re doing? Please share your memories in the comment field below.
