Women’s Basketball Already Making a Name This Season

Phoenix womens basketballThe Phoenix women’s basketball team topped the Horizon League’s preseason poll. The team was predicted to win its 12th straight league  title this year. The regular season begins Nov. 13 at North Dakota with exhibition games already in full swing.

Phoenix men to host Badgers

Among the season highlights, the Phoenix men’s basketball team will host UW-Madison at the Resch Center on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Tip-off is at 7:05 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. Call Ticketstar at (920) 494-3401.

Alumni and friends are welcome to a pre-game gathering at The Bar from 5-7 p.m. A cash bar and light hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

Also, the men’s basketball team plays its first-ever game at the Kress Center this year, hosting St. Norbert College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.

new Phoenix Athletics website launchedGreen Bay Athletics launched its new and enhanced website this summer at GreenBayPhoenix.com. Select games will still be streamed live through the Horizon League Network. Worth checking out, even during the summer break from competition, are features including video coaches’ shows (a few minutes in length) offering preseason insights on various Phoenix teams. The new emphasis on video, spotlighted under the headline “Phoenix Flix,” will also be a resource for highlights, facility and campus tours, feature stories and behind-the-scenes access at both the standard and premium-user levels. Senior Art Exhibits – April 12-23 and May 3-14

2930141774_36822607f7The Lawton Gallery will host two senior art exhibits this spring, April 12-23 and May 3-14, with opening receptions on April 12 and May 3 at 4 p.m. The two exhibits feature art work, in a wide variety of media, by graduating seniors.

Phoenix women’s basketball team returns to national spotlight

The Phoenix women’s basketball team dropped a 69-59 decision to No. 6 seed LSU, March 22 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Green Bay’s senior class finishes with program-record 107 victories.

Most of you know that the Phoenix women’s basketball team was back in the national spotlight, again. But maybe you didn’t hear that many of the other teams were taking care of the competition as well:

Women’s Swimming & Diving team captures the Horizon League Conference title for the 5th year in a row. (Read more)

Men’s basketball finished the season with 24 wins, while senior Terry Evans was selected to participate in the NCAA Final Four Slam Dunk Contest. (Read more)

Two Nordic ski team members qualified for the 2009 NCAA Skiing Championships. As a team, the duo placed the Phoenix 19th nationally. (Read more)

Phoenix run benefits cross-country program – Saturday, April 18

2591266The 12th Annual Phoenix 5K Cross Country Fundraiser will be held Saturday, April 18, at UW-Green Bay’s Kress Events Center. The run will start at 10:15 a.m., following the kids’ run at 10 a.m.

Participants can pre-register before April 12 for $15 ($20 on race day), $12 ($15 on race day) for UW-Green Bay students and staff, and $7 ($10 on race day) for the kids’ run. Entry forms are available at the Kress Events Center.

All proceeds will benefit the UW-Green Bay men’s and women’s cross country programs. Contact Coach Michael Kline, (920) 465-2950, for more information.

Alumni and players, team up for Pink Zone on Feb. 21

The Phoenix women’s basketball program is teaming up with Bellin Health to participate in the WBCA’s Pink Zone initiative to fight breast cancer. Green Bay’s Pink Zone game is scheduled for Feb. 21 against Loyola at 2 p.m. at the Kress Center. It’s also the annual women’s basketball alumni event. Women’s basketball alumni will be encouraging fans to where pink for awareness. Breast cancer survivors are invited to the Pink Zone game where they will receive a free ticket and a commemorative Pink Zone t-shirt. The former Phoenix stars inducted were (left to right) women’s basketball player Sue Pitroski, men’s soccer player Josh Lynk, and volleyball player Janelle Tomlinson Richard. Swimming and Diving teams seek fifth straight title

One more win and they’ve done it again. The Phoenix women’s basketball team will have recorded its ninth consecutive 20-win season, and once again, becomes the team to beat in the Horizon League. The team is unbeaten in League games heading into this week and is 19-3 overall. Follow the Phoenix.

We Did It! UWGB 75, Butler 66

Phoenix men win over Butler
The Green Bay men’s basketball team upset 75-66 No. 11 ranked Butler University on Monday, Feb. 2. This upset gave the Bulldogs their first Horizon League loss of the season.

The Phoenix picked up its third victory all time against ranked opponents and first since 1998, and Butler became the highest-ranked victim. The Phoenix is now 19-6 overall and 11-2 in the Horizon League. Coming up at a location near you — the Phoenix will play at 4:30 p.m. CST (2:30 p.m. Pacific Coast) Saturday, Feb. 21 in an ESPN Bracketbuster game. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU. Free admission for student-directed Copenhagen, February 12-14

student-directed play CopenhagenUW-Green Bay senior Matt Fayfer directs an upcoming production of the play “Copenhagen.” The play, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12, 13 and 14 in the University Theatre, features three actors depicting a mysterious meeting between nuclear physicists Neils Bohr and Werner Heisenberg in Nazi-occupied Denmark near the beginning of World War II.

“While the play’s subject matter may seem a bit heavy, the audience will find enjoyment from the intellectual stimulation offered by listening to Bohr and Heisenberg argue the issue back and forth,” Fayfer said.
