Why should you visit a college BEFORE you apply?
1. All colleges are different. Don’t assume that if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.
2. Location, location, location! Do you like the big city atmosphere, or something a little quieter? Take a walk around the campus and check out the surrounding area.
3. Talk to students—And not just one! Talk to as many as you can. They’ll give you the honest answers to the questions you have and fill you in on the “secrets” of the campus (AKA: the fun stuff)

Our own version
4. Peek into a few classrooms (or better yet, ask if you can sit in on a class). Are they big lecture halls? Small classrooms? Are the students taking notes or involved in a discussion?
5. Housing. Sometimes pictures of the student accommodations can be deceiving, so seeing them in person will help you figure out if you really can fit a futon, entertainment center, and bookshelf in your room (or to start working on your Tetris skills).

View from the door
6. Take the opportunity to meet a professor. If there is a professor available in the area you’d like to study, ask if you can have a short meeting with them.
7. Grab a copy of the campus newspaper. Stories and pieces written by students will also give you the lowdown on campus and local happenings and events.
8. Try the food! Look through the options; is there more than one thing that sounds appealing? Make sure you try it too—there’s nothing worse than food that looks good but tastes, well, not so good. (Try a sandwich at Shorewood!)
All in all, you want to find a place that you can see yourself at for the next four years. If you can’t see yourself being happy there after your visit, don’t bother applying. Would you buy a car without test driving it? A campus tour doesn’t take too long and will help you to make that important college decision. I know campus visits definitely helped me decide which schools I wanted to apply to and I hope that they’ll help you too. Happy touring! (You might even get me as a tour guide!)

Questions? No Need to Raise Your Hand…
This is the week just a short (or extremely long) year ago when I decided on UWGB myself. I remember May 1st was the big announcement day at my high school when everyone wore their new college spirit wear.
But I remember still having questions- so I will answer two big ones for you….
WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL THIS PAPERWORK?!
-Look it over. What needs a response? Send those in immediately! Especially when you receive things concerning housing, R&R sign up, E-Z books (which is really neat- and I strongly suggest it!), or other things. If you have questions, then call or email as soon as possible- it’s a busy time of year for everyone so the response will be as prompt as humanly possible.
-What about sheets of information? Phone numbers, hours for the clinic, bus routes, where to go for help- all of it is important. Keep a folder. At least for the first year it’s always nice to have. When I moved on campus my mom gave me a folder of what I saw at the time as useless information. I’ve used it MANY times throughout the year.
-Living on campus as a student or planning to visit as a parent? I highly suggest stopping at rest-stops (if you have a longer drive) or gas stations along the way and look for information pamphlets about fun stuff in town or a good map and put this in the folder too. There are some available in the University Union as well.
WHAT IS R&R?
You got an amazing description of R&R (or will be receiving one shortly) if you were an admitted freshman planning on attending UWGB.
Now, I know it’s your final weeks as a Senior, and I remember the senioritis well, so I will summarize for those who have brains as fried as I remember mine being.
-You will have a lot of icebreakers that you will think are lame and cheesy- but they really do help you meet people-so you should do them anyway- everyone looks and feels just as silly as you do.
-You will get TONS more information.
-You will pick classes for your first semester of college. That being said, don’t worry about it, you will have TONS of help doing so!
-YOU WILL HAVE YOUR PICTURE TAKEN….. it will be your picture for four years- and you have to carry it everywhere- don’t say you haven’t been warned. That being said, if you don’t care for your picture- you already have something in common with people here- and it’s no big deal.
-You will be asked if you have any questions throughout and at the end of the day, and you will probably not be able to think of any. On the way home you will think of 1,000 and remember that you have an e-mail of a wonderful Ambassador, who is a student just like you- and contact information for pretty much any department you may have questions for.
Oh, and you’ll get to meet me! I’m one of those Ambassador people you’ll be with all day- so feel free to ask me any questions, or just say hello!
If you have any other questions, general or specific, or you’d like to see a blog about anything in this last week you should e-mail me at philkr16@uwgb.edu or hit the little comment button (try it, it’s kind of fun!) and leave me a message!

My Last Blog?
The last day of classes is days away and my job for Admissions is coming to a close. This may be my last blog, at least for a while, but I will always answer any questions you have about our wonderful University. I won’t be updating this site during the summer, but anyone can send me a comment, question, or message to my email.
You can email me at Schimd31@uwgb.edu.
This summer I will be moving back to Appleton where I will be interning at 95.9 KISS FM and working part-time at a grocery store. I would rather be out on the golf course everyday, but I have to make some money for the fall semester. I’m not too much looking forward to the grocery store, but my internship should be a lot of fun and give me a lot of experience for my future.
Besides work, I will still have some fun, go golfing, and see some movies cause after all it is summer vacation. You got to have some fun!
I’m also looking forward to my family vacation in early August. It’s a while out still, but it doesn’t hurt to have something to look forward to while you are checking out groceries. I go up to the Minocqua area in Northern Wisconsin with my whole family and stay in my uncle’s cabin by the lake for a week. We go golfing, water skiing, and all the other camp-like activities you can think of…it’s a blast!
This may be your last summer before you come to UWGB. So in that case, maybe I will see you around campus next semester, but for now, have a great summer break! Remember to have some fun and shoot me an email whenever you want. Thanks for reading my blogs all year long, I had fun!

End of the Year is Very Near
When I say end of the year, I mean end of the semester. I just put year cause it rhymes with near…catchy huh?
The end of the school year means different things to everybody. Those who are graduating might think…wow…what now…the real world? And others might think…thank goodness summer is here finally!
Personally I have mixed feelings for the end of school and the start of summer vacation. On one hand, it will be nice to have a break from school. No homework, presentations, projects, or deadlines. I will also be interning at 95.9 KISS FM which will be a blast. But, on the other hand I will miss living on my own and being with all my friends. I also have to work a full time job in the summer, which I’m sure most of you know it’s not a cup of tea either. Especially when the job is not so glamorous.
I can’t help but remember back to Middle School, where summer vacation really lived up to its title. With no job, every day of summer was another day off to relax…at least it was for me. But those days are far-gone and today I’m lucky to have one full day off with nothing at all to do but kick back and relax. But that’s how it works out and everyone knows that as you get older, the workload doesn’t get any lighter.
I should be plenty busy over the summer, but I WILL still find time to have fun. After all what’s summer if you don’t have a little fun? I will try to get out on the golf course at least once a week, hopefully go to a few cinematic adventures, and of course there is my trip up north planned for early August. A full week with no stress and work…that’s sounds good right about now. In all reality, towards the end of June, I’ll be begging to come back to school. I always want what I don’t have it seems! When it’s summer I want to be at school and when I’m at school I can’t wait till summer. Funny how that work out I guess.
But enough about me…I would like to learn about your summer plans before your first semester here at UWGB! Please send messages or post comments on any big plans you have for the summer sun. Thanks for reading this post and now I have to go finish off my semester on a good note. It’s study time!

Life’s A Beach!
When I was in YOUR spot last year discussing colleges with my peers, one girl I talked to had one unique requirement- wherever she went, she wanted to be able walk to the beach. Looking at fun, warm places like California and Florida, she of course didn’t want to go THAT far from home. Little did she (or I, at the time) know that UW-Green Bay would have been a place of interest.
Yes, we are known for our beautiful arboretum, but did YOU know that Green Bay has access to the water?! I didn’t. I was excited when the beautiful 72 degree weather took my friend and I to Community Park, a University owned property only a short walk away from campus housing.
I had seen it as I drove by, but all I ever really caught a glimpse of was the big green space with some pretty benches, picnic tables, and trees. A great place for sun bathing or playing games and frequently used by the community, who would have thought so close to campus on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, you could kick off your flip-flops and take a walk in some sand?
But as I said in an earlier post, only in Wisconsin would a beautiful day mean more snow ahead! Oh well, I will wake up tomorrow with white flurries in the air, just waiting for Saturday when I can once again dangle my feet in the bay at Community Park.
(Not really a sand-in-your-toes person? Be sure to check out another unique piece of University property. Curly Lambeau cottage (the original cottage used by Curly Lambeau in his coaching days) is also only a short walk from campus and has an amazing view of the bay and the option to walk by the water.)

Shorewood Golf Course
It’s Open! Winter is finally gone (or so it seems) and the Shorewood Golf Course is now open for business. I may have mentioned this UWGB perk in a previous blog entry, but this one will be solely dedicated to the links.
For those who don’t know, Shorewood Golf Course is a 9-hole course located within the bounds of the UWGB campus. Shorewood is only a short walk away from many parts on campus with the longest walk only being about 15 minutes. In fact, some of the resident halls have views over looking the golf course. Most campuses don’t have such a luxury, but UWGB does. If you are an avid golfer or just occasionally like playing for fun there is nothing more convenient than playing a round of nine holes at Shorewood Golf Course. Students are busy people and we don’t have a lot of time on our hands to waste, so convenience is huge. UWGB also has a full disc golf course near Shorewood that is for Student use…that is when the weather is nice!
Money is also a factor for college students; most of us don’t have a whole lot of it. And the money we do have goes to food and stuff just to keep us alive. Some golf courses you can end up paying $20 or more for a round of nine holes, but not at the Shorewood Golf Course. Being a student here makes you eligible for a student discount. That means if you wanted to go play a round right now, it would only cost you 8 bucks. That’s less than a dollar per hole. I think it’s quite a deal…a deal that I took advantage of myself on Friday afternoon. I love golf and I try to get over to the course whenever I get the opportunity to.
Besides the golf, Shorewood is known around campus as a great place to eat. The Shorewood Restaurant inside of the clubhouse welcomes golfers and non-golfers to stop on by and enjoy a quality lunch. The Restaurant turns on their grills to the public Monday April 20th for the first time of the year. They have everything from burgers and fries to sandwiches, soup, and pizza. There entire menu can be found on their website. So when the food at the Union doesn’t crave what you are looking for on any particular day, then consider taking a nice walk outside to the Shorewood Golf Course to grab some lunch.
So, after reading this blog I hope you can tell that UWGB has a nice little bonus waiting for you when you arrive. A full 9-hole golf course complete with pro shop, restaurant, and leagues awaits a new class of freshmen each year, a new group of students who get to enjoy one of the many perks of UWGB. If you are interested in learning more about what the Shorewood Golf Course has to offer, go check out there main website .
Too bad it’s raining out right now as I write this, but if it wasn’t I might just be at Shorewood instead of working! J Please comment, I look forward to your feedback and questions.
